Connor Davis Interview - NFL Draft Blitz

Connor Davis Interview

Connor Davis

Tight End – Senior

Stony Brook

Alex Khvatov:  What are your measurements (height, weight and forty time)?

Connor Davis:  Height is 6’8 and I weighed in at 257.  My 40 time was a 4.81.

Alex Khvatov:  Where are you currently training for the NFL Draft?

Connor Davis:  At Test Football Academy in New Jersey.

Alex Khvatov:  Were you satisfied with your Pro Day performance?

Connor Davis:  Overall, it was a good day at Stony Brook last week.  I also had a pro day at Test Academy this morning (April 2nd).  I improved on my jumps.  I had 33 inches on the vertical and 10 inches on the broad today.  I am happy with the times.  I could have done better.  I am happy with the way I performed.  I did well in the positional drills both days.  I ran a 4.81 both days.

Alex Khvatov:  Do you have any local Pro Days coming up?

Connor Davis:  I have a Jets local pro day this Thursday, April 5th and a Giants local day this Friday, April 6th

Alex Khvatov:  Coming out of high school, what programs showed interest in you?

Connor Davis:  I played basketball until my junior year of high school.  I did track and field.  My primary focus was on football during my senior year.  I was a sleeper prospect.  I went to a small public school in Maryland.  Nobody has heard of me yet.  I went to a Maryland summer camp before my senior year.  I did well.  The coaches pulled me aside and asked who I was.  I met with Stony Brook at that camp.  They offered me a scholarship after another summer camp that I went to before my senior year.  It was my first offer.  I was talking to various schools in the CAA and Maryland.

Alex Khvatov:  Why did you choose Stony Brook?

Connor Davis:  Stony Brook was the first school to offer me.  It was a good fit academically as well as athletically.

Alex Khvatov:  Describe your overall career.

Connor Davis:  I went through a lot of transitions.  I was at Stony Brook for six years.  As a freshman, we won the Big South Conference the fourth time in a row.  We were the top team in the Big South.  Then we went to the CAA the next year.  It took us time to adjust to the higher level of competition.  As a senior, we became competitive again in a bigger conference.  I am very versatile.  I changed positions eight times in six seasons.  I played TE, OT and DE.  I moved around a lot because of injuries or guys leaving.  It was a cool experience.  I was a team player.  I went from starting at RT one season.  Then playing half of the season at TE and half of the season at DE the next.  As a senior, it was the first time I spent the entire year at TE since 2013.  It was great to settle down this year.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your strengths?

Connor Davis:  I bring effort.  I am relentless on the field.  I am always looking for that extra block.  I pick up game plans quickly.  I read the defense well and I know what they would do before the snap off the ball a lot of the times.  I am a mismatch with my size.  I have good athleticism.

Alex Khvatov:  What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?

Connor Davis:  At Stony Brook, it was a run heavy offense.  I have a lot of experience as a run blocker.  I have been focusing on getting low and exploding out of my cuts.  During training, I needed to get more flexible and explosive.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your favorite NFL team?

Connor Davis:  I grew up outside of Baltimore.  I followed the Ravens.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is your favorite NFL player?

Connor Davis:  For me, it was Todd Heap.  He stuck out to me.  I liked him from the get go.  He always made plays.  He was great to watch.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the most important trait for a TE?

Connor Davis:  You have to be ready to do the dirty work.  You have to do what’s necessary for the team to get the first down.  You might run a five-yard stick route or a 10-yard dig route on one play.  Then you would drive a 285-pound DE out of the way on the next play.

Alex Khvatov:  What players on your team should we keep an eye on for next season?

Connor Davis:  Cal Daniels plays the hybrid position.  He is an H-back who had two good seasons.  There is a young guy on defense, Sam Kamara, who has natural ability on the field.  We will see how he grows as a DE.  Joe Carbone is coming back at QB.  He had a good year.  RB Jordan Gowins is Stacey Bedell’s cousin.  He should have a good year.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is the best player that you have faced during your career?

Connor Davis:  Freshman year, I wasn’t getting much playing time.  I was behind a few TE’s on the depth chart.  It was Khalil Mack from Buffalo.  It was his senior year.  I took a couple of reps against him.  An athlete like him really stood out.

Alex Khvatov:  Which NFL player would you compare your game to?

Connor Davis:  Maybe Witten with Dallas or Kelce with the Chiefs.  They are very effective blockers and they are a mismatch in the passing game because of their size and athleticism.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you enjoy most about football?

Connor Davis:  I love competition.  There is nothing like stepping on that field.  It is a true test of will and determination.  You want to beat the man across from you.  I love that.  Once you step on the field, nothing compares to that feeling.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your hobbies?

Connor Davis:  I like reading in my spare time.  I also like to play video games.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you want to do with your life after your football career is over?

Connor Davis:  I would love to go back to school and get a master’s degree or PhD.  My major was in biology and a minor in bioengineering.  I want to get into research in biology and genetics.

Alex Khvatov:  Finish the sentence, Connor Davis is….

Connor Davis:  Relentless.
