Dre Cortez Interview

Dre Cortez – Cornerback – Senior – Fort Lewis College

Alex Khvatov:  What are your measurements (height, weight and forty time)?

Dre Cortez:  5’11, 187, 4.47.

Alex Khvatov:  Where will you be training for the NFL Draft?

Dre Cortez:  I’ll be training at my old high school with former University of Miami All-American Carl Richardson Jr. to get ready for my pro day as well as the draft.

Alex Khvatov:  Coming out of high school, what programs showed interest in
you?

Dre Cortez:  Coming out of high school, I had offers from West Virginia State, Langston and Fort Lewis.

Alex Khvatov:  Why did you choose Fort Lewis College?

Dre Cortez:  Fort Lewis just seemed like the right fit for me and gave me the chance to experience a part of the country that I had never experienced before.

Alex Khvatov:  Tell us about your overall experience at the National Bowl all-star game.

Dre Cortez:  It was a great overall experience.  I was able to meet a lot of people as well as play the game that I love at a high level.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the biggest thing that you will take away from that weekend?

Dre Cortez:  The biggest thing I will take away from the weekend is that there are tons of people with the same goals and dreams as you, but you have to do something to differentiate yourself.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is the best WR that you faced at the National Bowl?

Dre Cortez:  The best receiver I played against at the National Bowl was Brian Burnett from Tusculum University.  He was a very smooth route runner.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your strengths?

Dre Cortez:  I am a physical corner with very quick feet.  This allows me to work a lot of different techniques off the line as well as set my self up for being in a good position later in the route.

Alex Khvatov:  What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?

Dre Cortez:  I’m trying to improve on everything about my game, as there is always room to get better.

Alex Khvatov:  Describe your overall career.

Dre Cortez:  I’ve played football since young age and played just about everything until I got to high school.  I really fell in love with the defense.  This allowed me to accomplish my dream of getting a football scholarship and having the opportunity to play at the next level.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the highlight of your career up to this point?

Dre Cortez:  The highlight of my career by far was my first career pick six.  Definitely a moment I will never forget.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your favorite NFL team?

Dre Cortez:  My favorite NFL team is by far the Dallas Cowboys.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is your favorite NFL player?

Dre Cortez:  My favorite NFL player is Tyrann Mathieu.  He is a smaller guy who I try to emulate my play after.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the most important trait for a CB?

Dre Cortez:  The most important trait for a corner is having good eyes.  If a corner has bad eyes, they will get beat every time.

Alex Khvatov:  What underclassmen on your team should we keep an eye on
next season?

Dre Cortez:  Jake Lowry.  He is a dynamic quarterback that can do a little bit of everything.  He will always be the fastest person on the field.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is the best player that you have faced during your college career?

Dre Cortez:  The best player I’ve played against is Austin Ekeler.  He could score anytime he touched the ball if you weren’t prepared.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you enjoy most about football?

Dre Cortez:  My favorite part about football is the competition.  Having the opportunity to better yourself in every rep drives me.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your hobbies?

Dre Cortez:  My hobbies include playing video games, playing chess and watching basketball.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you want to do with your life after your football
career is over?

Dre Cortez:  After my football career is over, I would love to be a college DB coach and help develop the minds and talents of young men.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the biggest lesson that you have learned in life so far?

Dre Cortez:  The biggest lesson life has taught me is that no matter what happens, time is going to keep moving forward no matter who you are.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your definition of a leader?

Dre Cortez:  A leader is someone who leads by example and takes control in tough situations.

Alex Khvatov:  What five words best describe you?

Dre Cortez:  Passionate, dedicated, confident, a hard-worker and compassionate.

Alex Khvatov:  Who will win the National Championship in CFB this year?

Alex Khvatov:  Who will win Super Bowl LIII in February?

Dre Cortez:  The Dallas Cowboys all the way.
