DE Durrant Miles (Boise State) Interview

Durrant Miles
Defensive End
Boise State

Alex Khvatov:  What are your measurements (height, weight and forty time)?

Durrant Miles:  6’4 ½, 265 and the D-linemen didn’t run the forty-yard dashes at Boise State.

Alex Khvatov:  Where will you be training for the NFL Draft?

Durrant Miles:  I am training down at Exos in Phoenix, Arizona.

Alex Khvatov:  How would you describe your experience at the College Gridiron Showcase?

Durrant Miles:  It’s really been awesome in the short period of time that I have been here.  They have done a good job with seminars.  The people are great.  I am excited to go to practice.

Alex Khvatov:  Coming out of high school, what programs showed interest in
you?

Durrant Miles:  I grew up in Utah.  Utah, Utah State, Wyoming and Hawaii showed interest.  Boise State was also interested.

Alex Khvatov:  Why did you choose Boise State?

Durrant Miles:  I did a summer camp with them when coach Petersen was there.  I fell in love with Boise.  I went on a two-year mission.  I served it in Bolivia.  Coach Petersen left to Washington and he offered me.  I never visited the campus.  I didn’t know much about Washington.  I loved the environment at Boise.  I stuck with the commitment.

Alex Khvatov:  Tell us about your mission to Bolivia.

Durrant Miles:  It was very far from home.  It was a very eye-opening experience.  The living conditions and the poverty over there.  It was good to have once focus.  We wanted to bring them closer to Christ.  I learned Spanish.  I will always cherish those moments.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your strengths?

Durrant Miles:  Leadership and dedication.  I take pride in everything that I do.  I bring the right mentality on game day.  My teammates and coaching staff noticed that and presented me with the Lyle Smith Award.  It is a distinguished service award for buying into the program for my leadership qualities.  Lyle Smith was one of the coaches at Boise State in the beginning when they won a junior college championship.  He is the forefather at Boise State.  They have a statue of him.  I was honored to receive that award.

Alex Khvatov:  What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?

Durrant Miles:  Improve upon my explosiveness.  As a DE, you have to get after the QB and bend an edge.  You have to come off the ball hard and fast.  I will continue to work on it.

Alex Khvatov:  Describe your overall career.

Durrant Miles:  Freshman year, I was a scrawny little kid.  I dropped about 30 pounds on my mission.  I was 205 pounds when I came back and gained 10 pounds before getting to Boise.  I was 215 pounds my freshman year and I wanted to play.  I didn’t want to redshirt.  I spoke with the coaches and told them I want to contribute in any way possible.  I played a role on special teams.  I also got some defensive snaps as a backup in blowout wins.  I played against Virginia and my first tackle was a TFL.  We had a good team that year.  Our defense took care of business.  During my sophomore year, I was rotating with Jabril Frazier.  He went down with an injury, and I started for eight or nine games that season.  But we lost to Baylor in the Cactus Bowl to Baylor.  I played OLB my sophomore year.  Before my junior year, I put on more weight, and they moved me to DE my junior year.  I played DE the last two seasons.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the highlight of your career up to this point?

Durrant Miles:  My junior year, we were able to finish the season the right way.  We won the MWC Championship and we beat Oregon in the Las Vegas Bowl.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your biggest accomplishment in college that you are most proud of?

Durrant Miles:  Marrying my high school sweetheart about a year and a half ago.  Her name is Karra.  She is everything to me.

Alex Khvatov:  What have you learned the most from your coaching staff?

Durrant Miles:  They stressed daily discipline and dedication.  You have to put in the hard work.

Alex Khvatov:  How would you describe your teammate QB Brett Rypien?

Durrant Miles:  He is awesome.  He does a great job on the field.  He is set passing records.  Off the field, he is a humble guy.  He does a great job mingling.  He has awesome character.  We are great friends.  I love that kid to death.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your favorite NFL team?

Durrant Miles:  I follow the Cowboys.  It is my wife’s favorite team.  Plus they have a lot of the Boise State players on the team: Tyrone Crawford, DeMarcus Lawrence, Darian Thompson, Leighton Vander Esch and Cedrick Wilson.

Durrant Miles:  Khalil Mack.  He is incredible at what he does.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is the best player that you have faced on an opposing team?

Durrant Miles:  QB Josh Allen from Wyoming.  We played him my junior year.  He does a great job.  He is physical, smart, athletic and talented.
