West Report (Day 1) – 2019 East/West Shrine Game

2019 East/West Shrine Game

West Report – Day 1 (Monday Practice)

By: Alex Khvatov

QB Brett Rypien (Boise State) – was the most consistent signal caller during Monday’s practice.  He was accurate in the short/intermediate area.  He completed a couple of passes with great anticipation.  He has a quick release and displayed good ball placement.  It wasn’t all perfect, he threw a wobbly downfield pass into tight coverage that hung up in the air and was intercepted.

RB Devine Ozigbo (Nebraska) – has good size and displayed quick feet.  He showed good vision and found small openings in the defense.  His lateral quickness and start/stop ability are evident.

WR KeeSean Johnson (Fresno State) – was the most impressive offensive player for the West squad.  He was so smooth and showed good acceleration off the line.  He ran precise routes and caught the ball well over his shoulder.  Good hands and impressive body control.  You can line him up outside or in the slot.

WR Cody Thompson (Toledo) – is a great route runner.  He understands the nuances of the position.  He looked quicker than what I saw from him during his senior campaign.  He also has terrific hands.  He is a dangerous slot WR.

DT Daniel Wise (Kansas) – is a versatile player that can play inside (three-tech) or outside (five-technique).  He was unstoppable during day one of practice.  He displayed great quickness in the one on one’s and continued to wreak havoc during the scrimmage portion.  He is an athletic DL with a great motor.  He was the most impressive player on the defensive side off the ball.

DE Markus Jones (Angelo State) – is an athletic DE who showed great speed and bend off the edge.  He had a lot of success in the one on one sessions.  He played with good leverage and showcased an impressive bull rush.

DT Chris Nelson (Texas) – has played DE and NT at Texas.  He surprised me today and stood out with his pass rush moves during the one on one’s.

CB Jordan Wyatt (SMU) – is a playmaker at the CB position.  He has terrific ball skills.  He displayed very quick feet.  He can turn and run with receivers downfield.  I was impressed with his ability to close on the ball.

P Jack Fox (Rice) – displayed his strong leg today inside the Tropicana Field.  He also got great hangtime on his punts.  He was consistent throughout the day.
