OT Joe Lowery (Ohio) Interview - NFL Draft Blitz

OT Joe Lowery (Ohio) Interview

Joe Lowery
Offensive Tackle
Ohio

Ed Hunt:  What are your measurements at your Pro Day? (Height, Weight and 40 time)

Joe Lowery:  I was 6’6 1/8, 300 pounds and ran a 5.18 40.

Ed Hunt:  What positions can you play on the offensive line?

Joe Lowery:  I would feel comfortable playing guard and tackle.

Ed Hunt:  Describe your overall experience at the NFLPA Bowl.

Joe Lowery:  I ended up leaving a little bit early.  It was really great planning.  I was very grateful for that experience.

Ed Hunt:  Why did you leave the NFLPA Bowl early?

Joe Lowery:  Illness.  I just didn’t feel that well.

Ed Hunt:  Who is the best player you have faced on an opposing team?

Joe Lowery:  There have been some really great players.  In 2016, Derrick Barnett from Tennessee and Bud Dupree.  Olasunkanmi Adeniyi from Toledo.  Sutton Smith from IU was a great player as well.

Ed Hunt:  Coming out of high school, which schools showed interest in you?

Joe Lowery:  I had just about every school in the MAC.  I had offers from Cincinnati and Illinois.  I had some interest from the Big 10, but never turned into an offer.

Ed Hunt:  What made you ultimately choose Ohio?

Joe Lowery:  Frank Solich sold me on Ohio.  He was a great coach.

Ed Hunt:  What are your strengths?

Joe Lowery:  Athleticism and football intelligence.

Ed Hunt:  What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?

Joe Lowery:  Honestly trying to improve on every part of my game.  Learning more technical things.  So many things go into what you see and learning those things give you an edge.

Ed Hunt:  Describe your overall career.

Joe Lowery:  It’s been a great experience.  I started playing in high school.  I was very fortunate to start over 40 games here.  Coaching staff prepared me.  It went by very fast.

Ed Hunt:  What is the highlight of your career at this point?

Joe Lowery:  Our two bowl championships.  You play the game to win.  Good to take home some hardware.  Team success is what you strive for.

Ed Hunt:  I noticed you have good awareness on the offensive line.  What do you attribute this to?

Joe Lowery:  My coaching staff and the players I am around.  Dave Johnson and Bart Miller were great coaches.  Very intelligent people.  I can’t thank my coaches enough.

Ed Hunt:  What have you learned the most from your coaching staff?

Joe Lowery:  To control what you can control.  There is only so much you can control.  How much you prepare and trusting your training.  Just got to go out there and play football.

Ed Hunt:  Tell me about Joe Anderson, your teammate on the offensive line.

Joe Lowery:  Joe Anderson is one of the most underrated guys I have ever been around.  Extremely intelligent.  He is a little oversized, but slimmed down a lot.  I credit him with the success we have had together.

Ed Hunt:  Would you consider yourself a quiet leader?

Joe Lowery:  I would say so yes.  I see myself as a lead by example kind of guy.  I’m not a “rah-rah” screaming in your face.  I want to be someone people look up to.

Ed Hunt:  What is your favorite NFL team?

Joe Lowery:  Cleveland Browns.

Ed Hunt:  Who is your favorite NFL player?

Joe Lowery:  Joe Thomas.  Being a Cleveland fan, he is one of the best there ever was.

Ed Hunt:  What’s the most important trait for an offensive lineman?

Joe Lowery:  There are so many things that go into being an offensive lineman.  You have to be smart and you have to be tough.  Offensive line is going all the time.  You have to be intelligent to keep on going.

Ed Hunt:  Before the ball is snapped, what tendencies are you looking for in that defense?

Joe Lowery:  There’s so many little things.  People leaning in their stances.  The linebackers, safeties and corners.  Been doing it for a while now.

Ed Hunt:  What players on your team should we keep an eye on for next season?

Joe Lowery:  Austen Pleasants, number 60.  Nathan Rourke, our QB.  Safety Javon Hagan.  I really think we have some special guys, and it’s hard to say all of them because we have so many.

Ed Hunt:  What do you enjoy most about football?

Joe Lowery:  Being a part of a team.  It’s a brotherhood.  You got 11 guys on a team, and everybody has to do their job to accomplish the big goal of winning.  You want to be there all the time.

Ed Hunt:  Who is your biggest role model and why?

Joe Lowery:  My mother.  She has always been there for me, my brother and my sister.  She shows me what hard work is.  Being a single mother, she has done a great job and I can’t thank her enough.

Ed Hunt:  What is your definition of a leader?

Joe Lowery:  A leader is the one who brings the group together to win.  He can understand other people and not everybody is capable of doing that and that is why leaders are so special.

Ed Hunt:  What do you want to do with your life after football?

Joe Lowery:  Well, originally, I wanted to be a nurse.  That is still one my goals.  My degree was in health service administration.  Probably working in a hospital.  I want to give back to others.

Ed Hunt:  What five words best describe you?

Joe Lowery:  Humble, respectful, intelligent, dedicated and driven.

Ed Hunt:  Who will win the Super Bowl next year?

Joe Lowery:  Cleveland Brownies, baby!
