FB Brady May (Weber State) Interview - NFL Draft Blitz

FB Brady May (Weber State) Interview

Brady May
Fullback
Weber State

Alex Khvatov:  What are your measurements (height, weight and forty time)?

Brady May:  Height was just under 5’11, 227 and my hand time was somewhere in the 4.7’s.

Alex Khvatov:  Where are you currently training for the NFL Draft?

Brady May:  I am training in Utah at Stroformance with Dave Stroshine.  I worked out there for eight weeks leading up to the pro day.  One of my former teammates worked out there.  He had good things to say about it.  My agent got behind the idea of me training there as well.

Alex Khvatov:  Tell me about your overall performance at the Pro Day.  What were your numbers?

Brady May:  I was pretty happy about most of it.  I started off with 32 on the bench.  I was trying to get 34 reps.  I got 34-inches on the vertical and my broad jump was a 9’5.  I was trying to get in the 4.3 range in the shuttle, but I was nowhere near that time.  I was a lot more comfortable doing the drills.  Catching the ball and running through the bags.  I had a couple of scouts asking me to catch some balls at the end of practice.

Alex Khvatov:  Coming out of high school, what programs showed interest in you?

Brady May:  Coming out of high school, I had zero offers.  I played at a high school in Idaho.  I had a good career.  I went to Snow junior college in Utah.  Weber State offered me a preferred walk-on spot.  They were changing coaches every other year.  There was no stability at the program at the time.  Snow college is a good junior college.  I had a couple of cousins that went there.  I went on a mission to Mexico.  After the mission, I was planning to return to Snow college.  But they had a coaching change when I came back.  I was excited about going down there, but I talked to the OC and it just didn’t feel right.

Alex Khvatov:  Why did you choose Weber State?

Brady May:  I called coach Swan at Weber State.  I told him that I was going back home to Idaho.  I told him that I was back from the mission and I wanted to play.  I was serious about playing.  I drove down to Weber State.  We talked.  He got me a spot and got me into summer school.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your strengths?

Brady May:  I grew up on a farm in Southern Idaho.  The biggest thing for me is my work ethic.  I am not the most talented or biggest guy, but I can outwork people.  I have a blue-collar mentality.  I have the toughness and I love to play football.  I love playing special teams.  I can play FB, catch the ball, block and carry the ball.  I am versatile.  I was a long snapper this year.

Alex Khvatov:  What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?

Brady May:  Being more explosive and faster.  I have been working on my flexibility.  I want to continue to develop that.

Alex Khvatov:  How would you describe your overall career?

Brady May:  I was a walk on in the beginning.  Coach Swan was the only one that knew who I was in the building.  It was a relatively new staff with Coach Hill.  I started off at the bottom.  I played special teams and worked my way up.  I started playing LB in the beginning.  We had a FB that quit.  The coach came up to me and asked me if I wanted to get on the field.  I said that I would play any position.  They moved me to FB.  I made the first trip, but I didn’t dress.  I got in and played special teams the second game at North Dakota State.  I played special teams all four years.  I love playing it.  I started to play on offense the next year.  Halfway through my second year, they gave me a scholarship during my sophomore year.  During my junior year, I played on offense and got Big Sky accolades and I was a special teams all-American.  I was an All-American on special teams again my senior year and I was second team all-Big Sky at FB.  Weber State was a perfect program for me.  Everything was awesome including the coaches and the players.  I was a part of the class that turned it around.  We won back-to-back Big Sky championships.  We made the playoffs the last three years.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the highlight of your career up to this point?

Brady May:  Most memorable moment was winning the Big Sky championships.  It was really cool.  We won one in Ogden and won one in Idaho.  It was a humbling moment.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your biggest accomplishment in college that you are most proud of?

Brady May:  Being named team captain my senior year.

Alex Khvatov:  What have you learned the most from your coaching staff?

Brady May:  Coach Hill was good about making us think about things.  Coach Hill told us that you earn the right to be proud and confident through preparation.  You earn that through how hard you work and how you practice.  It carries over to every aspect of your life.  Coach Hill and that coaching staff cared about who we were as people.  They would give us different lessons.  They wanted us to be better citizens and students.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your favorite NFL team?

Brady May:  My dad lived in Chicago a little bit before I was born.  He was a big Jim McMahon fan.  I was a Bears fan growing up.  I enjoyed watching them.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is your favorite NFL player?

Brady May:  Being a Bears fan, I love watching Tarik Cohen and how explosive he is.  I also like watching winners.  Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady are great leaders.  I love football.  Khalil Mack is a great player.  I admire how dominant he is.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the most important trait for a FB?

Brady May:  You have to be a tough dude.  You have to be athletic and catch the ball well.  You have to be the hammer.

Alex Khvatov:  Before the ball is snapped, what are the tendencies that you are looking for from the defense?

Brady May:  Depending on the play.  I worked a lot this season with the offensive line coach and our OC.  I wanted to know what everyone was doing on our offense.  I had to be the cleanup guy up front.  I had to be smart enough to adjust.  Checking what the defense was doing and making sure that I put myself in the right position.

Alex Khvatov:  What players on your team should we keep an eye on for next season?

Brady May:  DE Jonah Williams is a team captain.  He is a great football player.  He is a big kid.  LB Auston Tesch should have a big year.  RB Josh Davis is a stud.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is the best player that you have faced on an opposing team?

Brady May:  Carson Wentz was unreal.  I played him my freshman year.  Cooper Kupp was great.  Those guys are phenomenal.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you enjoy most about football?

Brady May:  Two things.  I love the camaraderie.  I love being with my teammates.  I love to compete.  I like going through winter conditioning and getting ready for the season.  I love the atmosphere of college football.

Alex Khvatov:  What makes you unique?

Brady May:  I served a mission.  I am fluent in Spanish.  I lived in a different country.  It gives me a different perspective on life.  I lived for two years in Mexico.  As a football player, I am versatile.  I can play special teams, fullback and long snap.  I didn’t just line up as a FB.  I was a wing/H-back.  I played RB and lined up in the slot.  I bring a lot of versatility.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your hobbies?

Brady May:  I am from Southern Idaho.  I am a farm boy.  I like to waterski.  I enjoy motorcycles and hunting.  I am a family guy.  I like to be with my family.  I like to work out.  I have been married almost three years.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you want to do with your life after your football career is over?

Brady May:  I am not super set on anything right now.  I want to get into professional sales.  I want to be involved in agriculture and work around farms.  I want to provide for my family.  I want to come back to Idaho when the time is right.

Alex Khvatov:  What five words best describe you?

Brady May:  Blue-collar, tough, smart, accountable and happy.
