S Patrick Nelson (SMU) Shrine Bowl Interview

Patrick Nelson

Safety / SMU

Alex Khvatov:  Describe your overall experience at the 2020 East/West Shrine Bowl.

Patrick Nelson:  It is always good to be getting back to football.  Getting your feet wet.  I am playing a little bit of a different position than what I played at SMU.

Alex Khvatov:  How is the position switch going so far?

Patrick Nelson:  It’s great.  I like that I am so versatile that I can play multiple positions.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your strengths?

Patrick Nelson:  I tackle, blitz, cover and tackle well.  I am very athletic.

Alex Khvatov:  What areas of your game do you need to improve upon this week?

Patrick Nelson:  Just being more comfortable when I am in the middle of the field.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the highlight of your career up to this point?

Patrick Nelson:  When we beat Tulsa.  We were down 24-21 in the fourth quarter.  We were able to rally back.

Alex Khvatov:  How would you describe your career?

Patrick Nelson:  I started off at Illinois.  I started there for two years.  I played safety there.  I wanted a bigger role.  I chose to transfer.  I went to SMU and did everything that I wanted to do.  I was still versatile on defense at SMU.

Alex Khvatov:  Why did you decide to transfer to SMU?

Patrick Nelson:  Just the relationship that I had with Kevin Kane.  He let me blitz and let me be very versatile in his defense.

Alex Khvatov:  What one word best describes you?

Patrick Nelson:  Relentless.
