Practice Report Day Two
South Team
Today was a beautiful day. It was the first padded practice of the week and had many highlights. Let’s get to them.
Quarterbacks
Justin Herbert (Oregon): bounced back today. He was crisp throwing passes and looked the best throwing on the run. He looked like the QB I saw on tape today.
Jalen Hurts (Alabama): looked good throwing on the run. He interests me still. I think his best game is in the game where you don’t know if he will run or pass.
Steven Montez (Colorado): has been the most consistent of the South quarterbacks. He has made himself some money in Mobile if he can have another good practice.
Running Backs
Ke’Shawn Vaughn (Vanderbilt): Looked good running routes out of the backfield.
Lamical Perine (Florida): Looked good running the ball. He was also the best running back in pass protection. He had good hand placement and moved his feet well in pass pro. He also was running good routes today.
Eno Benjamin (Arizona State): was up and down in terms of blocking, but had the best hands.
Antonio Gibson (Memphis): Showed good hand placement and sustained his blocks well in pass protection.
Wide Receivers
Van Jefferson (Florida): Killed it on the one on ones. He wins with short area quickness and runs very smooth routes. He also had a nice catch in traffic from Justin Herbert. I did see a drop near the sidelines though.
Kalija Lipscomb (Vanderbilt): Muffed a punt badly at the beginning of practice, but recovered and was more consistent after that.
Jauan Jennings (Tennessee): I liked his route running today.
Tyree Cleveland (Florida): Had a couple drops today.
Tight Ends
Harrison Bryant (FAU): had a really good day. Was finishing his blocks, catching the ball away from his frame and showed good route running. He was a huge winner today.
Offensive Linemen
Damien Lewis (LSU): Played with good leverage today and won his battles in the one on one’s.
Tyre Phillips (Mississippi State): Was able to reset well in pass protection. He also got praise from the coaches for his run blocking.
Ben Bartch (Saint John’s): I like the way he squared on a block.
Alex Taylor (South Carolina State): Picked up how to do a kick slide in the drill when others couldn’t. He also had a great block in the scrimmage. He got some praise from the Bengals coaches.
Keith Ismael (San Diego State): I like the way he got his hands underneath in blocking in the one on one’s. I also liked the way he held his ground in pass blocking.
Calvin Throckmorton (Oregon): I liked what I saw from his blocking. He was added to the Senior Bowl Roster today from the Shrine Bowl.
Logan Stenberg (Kentucky): Threw a guy down on a one on one. He drew a cheer from the crowd.
Defensive Linemen
Terrell Lewis (Alabama): had two sacks in the scrimmage and one was a strip sack.
Jabari Zuniga (Florida): did well on a shedding blocks drill. I also liked his persistence with the hand fighting.
Josiah Coatney (Ole Miss): Did well in the one on one’s.
Javon Kinlaw (South Carolina): Struggled in the one on ones. He also disappointed the coaches who needed to coach him up. He did get better as the practice went on.
Robert Windsor (Penn State): Did well using his wingspan to win the hand fighting in the one on ones. He was offsides once in the scrimmage though.
Linebackers
Akeem Davis-Gaither (Appalachian State): was so quick getting into the backfield and was instinctual blowing up plays. He is athletic and has great speed.
TJ Brunson (South Carolina): had great coverage in the one on ones.
Cornerbacks
Dane Jackson (Pitt): I liked what I saw from him in the opening warmups. Showed a lot of energy and effort in warming up. I like that he does the little things. If there is one thing that I don’t like about him is that he is a little stiff hipped.
Darnay Holmes (UCLA): Was able to stay in phase covering in the slot.
Reggie Robinson II (Tulsa): showed good awareness in zone. I did see him get coached up by one of the Bengals coaches.
Safeties
Kyle Dugger (Lenoir Rhyne): looked good fielding punts today at the beginning of practice. As a safety, he had great speed in the one on ones. He also had a good pass breakup and an INT when he stepped in front of a tight end to undercut a pass.
K’Von Wallace (Clemson): Had an interception in the scrimmage.
