Bryce Huff
DE/OLB / Memphis
Alex Khvatov: How would you describe your overall experience at the 2020 East/West Shrine Bowl?
Bryce Huff: It has been a cool experience coming out here. Being able to play for the kids who need it. I have had fun. I have been able to go to meetings and be around guys who are next level athletes. These guys take the game seriously, and I can talk football with them. Being able to get coached by NFL coaches is pretty cool. The way they see the game and break things down. It has opened up my eyes to the game.
Alex Khvatov: You felt a lot more comfortable today and were flying around the field. What was the difference for you out here today?
Bryce Huff: My defense wasn’t like this at all. It has been a learning curve for me. The different terminology. I have studied the playbook and tried to have it in the back of my head, so I can just go out there and play fast. My athletic ability is there. I just have to put it together and go out there and play.
Alex Khvatov: Your head coach Mike Norvell turned Memphis around. What was it like to play for him?
Bryce Huff: It was a great experience. People are excited that he is at Florida State, but they should be ecstatic. He coached us on the field and gave us a lot of life lessons off the field. He is really big on accountability. He talked about holding ourselves and our teammates accountable. That is a big part of being a leader. Just doing the right thing on and off the field. I took his lessons to heart and do everything at a high level.
Alex Khvatov: How did you wind up at Memphis?
Bryce Huff: My high school career was kind of rocky. My first two seasons, I was very undersized. I didn’t have any offers going into my junior season. I broke my shoulder the game before the playoffs my junior year. That killed my recruitment for a while. I rehabbed, got my weight up and was really a new person going into the spring of my senior season. Then I got offers from everybody. Every Sun Belt school offered me. Memphis came in, and they offered me. I made the switch from South Alabama. It was the best decision that I could have made.
Alex Khvatov: What is the highlight of your career up to this point?
Bryce Huff: Beating Ole Miss because of what it meant to our city and the fans. Also playing in the Cotton Bowl. I was a leader for the team this past season. It meant a lot to be at the forefront, leading the guys to a bowl game.
Alex Khvatov: What is the biggest attribute that you bring to an NFL team?
Bryce Huff: My work ethic. At the end of the day, you come out and play football, but I feel that I can keep the energy at a high level. Having everybody focused and on point. I play out of my mind in practice to keep that energy up. The offensive guys kind of looked tired today. Let’s turn it up, and we did that as a defense. I bring leadership to an NFL team.
Alex Khvatov: What one word best describes you?
Bryce Huff: Relentless.
