S Jarey Elder (West Chester) Interview

Jarey Elder
Safety / West Chester

Alex Khvatov:  What are your measurements (height, weight and forty time)?

Jarey Elder:  I am 5’10 ½, and 195 right now.  I am looking to get up to 200 pounds.  I plan to run in the sub 4.5’s.

Alex Khvatov:  Where are you currently training for the NFL Draft?

Jarey Elder:  I am down at Michael Johnson Performance in McKinney, Texas.   For me, speed was my focus.  Michael Johnson was a professional who made his money being fast.  They break everything down to a science.  Being from Pennsylvania, I wanted to get away from it all and work on my dream.

Alex Khvatov:  Coming out of high school, what programs showed interest in you?

Jarey Elder:  I had interest as a receiver coming out.  I was an all-state DB, but I thought that I am going to play WR in college.  I had an offer from Albany and Temple offered me as a walk-on spot after I committed to West Chester.  My grades were a struggle out of high school.

Alex Khvatov:  Why did you choose West Chester?

Jarey Elder:  My brother was already playing at West Chester.  They had a great family atmosphere and great coaches.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your strengths?

Jarey Elder:  My athletic ability.  I am smart and I put in the hard work.  I study film like a coach.  My receiver’s background allows me to attack the ball.  I have forced over 20 turnovers.

Alex Khvatov:  What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?

Jarey Elder:  They have questions about my speed.  They want to see whether I have 4.4 or 4.5 speed.  I plan to get faster and stronger.

Alex Khvatov:  How would you describe your overall career?

Jarey Elder:  I redshirted when I came in.  I made an impact the following year in the nickel and special teams.  I started at SS my sophomore year.  I matured fast.  During my junior year, I was a first team All-American.  I had 7 INT’s that year.  I was making plays.  We won a conference title.  I was a team captain my senior year.  Teams went away from me my senior season.  I was still able to force two fumbles, recover two fumbles and had three picks.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the highlight of your career up to this point?

Jarey Elder:  Winning the PSAC championship my junior year.  The team hasn’t won since 1971.  I was thankful for it.  We won 33-10.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the most important trait for a DB?

Jarey Elder:  Dependability as a safety.  If we make a mistake in the secondary, it gets exposed more.

Alex Khvatov:  Which NFL player would you compare your game to?

Jarey Elder:  Tyrann Mathieu.  We are both playmakers.

Alex Khvatov:  What players on your team should we keep an eye on for next season?

Jarey Elder:  Rasheem James had a year off.  He is an exciting WR.  He will do a lot on special teams and as a receiver with the ball in his hands.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you enjoy most about football?

Jarey Elder:  I love the game.  I have been playing it my whole life since I was four years old.  I love everything about it.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your hobbies?

Jarey Elder:  I love spending time with my family.  My father and I shoot pool and play ping pong.  I like to go bowling.  We are a family of athletes.  My cousins play in the NFL.

Alex Khvatov:  What one word best describes you?

Jarey Elder:  Grinder.  I have a chip on my shoulder.  I have always had that.
