DE Tre Hornbuckle (Duke) Interview

Tre Hornbuckle
Defensive End / Duke

Alex Khvatov:  What are your measurements (height, weight and forty time)?

Tre Hornbuckle:  6’3, 255 and I don’t know my 40 time

Alex Khvatov:  Where are you currently training for the NFL Draft?

Tre Hornbuckle:  I am currently training at D1 Tampa.

Alex Khvatov:  Describe your overall experience at the Tropical Bowl in Daytona Beach, FL.

Tre Hornbuckle:  Overall, I had a really good experience getting to compete in front of NFL and CFL scouts to showcase my talents.  It was all a blessing to be able to strap up again, and I learned a good deal of knowledge while I was there that helped my game.

Alex Khvatov:  What was the biggest thing that you took away from that all-star weekend?

Tre Hornbuckle:  The thing I took away from it was to have fun with the game of football because I can’t play this game forever.  I need to enjoy every moment of it while having laser focus and executing my job to the best of my ability so that way I can play for as long as possible.

Alex Khvatov:  Coming out of high school, what programs showed interest in you?

Tre Hornbuckle:  I had 10 scholarships coming out of high school.  Indiana, Indiana State, Southern Illinois, Murray State, Austin Peay, Duke, Ohio, Miami (OH), Ball State and Samford.

Alex Khvatov:  Why did you choose Duke?

Tre Hornbuckle:  I chose Duke because they presented a great opportunity for me to play against stellar competition and to get a great education.  Honestly, it just felt like home when I stepped on campus.

Alex Khvatov:  What was it like to play for David Cutcliffe?

Tre Hornbuckle:  It was a great experience playing for Coach Cut.  He really pushes his players to be the best players they can be as well as being the best men that they can be.  He is great coach, but honestly, he is an even better man.  I love coach Cut and it was an honor to play for him.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your strengths?

Tre Hornbuckle:  I feel like my work ethic is a huge strength of mine because I am willing to do whatever is necessary to make sure I’m in the position to be successful.  I am an extremely physical player who has a high motor and I contain great leadership skills.  I make game changing plays where they are needed.

Alex Khvatov:  What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?

Tre Hornbuckle:  I have been focusing on making sure my pad level is low because sometimes I can catch myself in high positions.  I’ve been working to improve my pass rush every day because that’s where the money is.

Alex Khvatov:  Tell us about your overall career.

Tre Hornbuckle:  My career was very humbling.  There were a lot of ups and downs to it, but it definitely made a man out of me and it was a blessing to experience it!

Alex Khvatov:  What is the highlight of your career up to this point?

Tre Hornbuckle:  I can definitely say my highlight is winning my first bowl game in 2017.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your biggest accomplishment in college that you are most proud of?

Tre Hornbuckle:  I would say being voted a team captain my senior year.  It meant a lot to me knowing that my teammates and coaching staff had a great deal of respect for me as a leader.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the most important trait for a DL?

Tre Hornbuckle:  I think effort is biggest trait of a DL because all the havoc plays come from how hard a DL is playing.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your favorite NFL team?

Tre Hornbuckle:  I was a Ravens fan all of Ray Lewis’s career and once he retired after his last season, I no longer had a favorite team.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is your favorite NFL player?

Tre Hornbuckle:  All time was Ray Lewis and currently is Cam Jordan.

Alex Khvatov:  Before the ball is snapped, what are the tendencies that you are looking for from the offense?

Tre Hornbuckle:  I look at the down and distance of the sticks.  I look at the stance of the offensive lineman to see if I can get a clue on whether it will be run or pass on that play from how he is aligned.

Alex Khvatov:  What players on your team should we keep an eye on for next season?

Tre Hornbuckle:  Deon Jackson (RB), Brandon Hill (LB), Victor Dimukeje (DE), Chris Rumph II (DE), Shaka Heyward (LB), Drew Jordan (DE), Noah Gray (TE), and Derrick Tangelo (DT).

Alex Khvatov:  Who is the best player that you have faced on an opposing team?

Tre Hornbuckle:  My freshman season at Duke we played against Lamar Jackson.  He was the best player I’ve ever played against along with Jerry Jeudy from Alabama this season.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you enjoy most about football?

Tre Hornbuckle:  I just love being physical.  Honestly, I get a great deal of enjoyment from it.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your hobbies?

Tre Hornbuckle:  I love to go fishing.  I love to play video games and watch movies.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you want to do with your life after your football career is over?

Tre Hornbuckle:  I really want to go into some sort of Federal law enforcement agency when I am done.  It has always been something I wanted to do since I was little.

Alex Khvatov:  What five words best describe you?

Tre Hornbuckle:  Diligent, hardworking, leader, selfless and fearless.
