DB Jay Wright (Seton Hill) Interview - NFL Draft Blitz

DB Jay Wright (Seton Hill) Interview

Jay Wright
Defensive Back / Seton Hill

Alex Khvatov:  What are your measurements (height, weight and forty time)?

Jay Wright:  6’0 1/2, 202, 31-inch arms and 4.48.

Alex Khvatov:  Where are you currently training for the NFL Draft?

Jay Wright:  I’m training with Trevor Anderson at Better Everyday in Orlando.  He’s an amazing trainer and a great guy.

Alex Khvatov:  When is your Pro Day?

Jay Wright:  I’m actually still looking for a school that will allow me into their pro day.  In the past, the PSAC conference that I played in hosted a pro day, but unfortunately isn’t doing it this year.

Alex Khvatov:  Describe your overall experience at the Tropical Bowl in Daytona Beach, FL.

Jay Wright:  Overall, it was a good experience.  It was a blessing to be one of the few players from the FCS/National bowl to play with FBS players.  It definitely was an honor to have my talents recognize.  However, as a team it could’ve been better because we lost the bowl and individually, I played the whole weekend with a pretty bad turf toe injury.  It affected my game a quite bit.  However, I fought through the pain and really showed out during the second practice day and was named a defensive stand out by Emory Hunt.  I enjoyed competing and holding my own against the D1 talent.

Alex Khvatov:  What was the biggest thing that you took away from that all-star weekend?

Jay Wright:  This weekend confirmed that I can match up with the big school guys.  I matched up against power five conference guys in the slot and on the outside.  Not only held my own, but made plays.  Coming from a D-II school, scouts often doubt how you match up against D-I & NFL talent, but I know that I answered those questions.  In retrospect, it’s definitely a confidence boost knowing I was named a stand out and was only about at 75-80% out there.

Alex Khvatov:  Coming out of high school, what programs showed interest in you?

Jay Wright:  JU (Jacksonville), Mercer, Charleston Southern, Georgetown & a few other FCS programs.

Alex Khvatov:  How did you wind up at Seton Hill?

Jay Wright:  Directly after high school, I played at Carson Newman.  I played in one game and then broke my foot and redshirted. After that year, I decided to leave CNU and I attended FAU as a student.  I truly believed that I was a D-I talent and I bet on myself to walk on and receive a scholarship.  Long story short, that never happened, so I decided I would further pursue my football career in grad school.  I reached out to the coaching staff and they welcomed me.  I am forever thankful.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your strengths?

Jay Wright:  In press coverage, I am both patient and physical.  I can motor off or jam the receiver because of my feet & lateral quickness.  I am explosive out of my breaks, a solid tackler, can blitz the QB, use my film study, football IQ & instincts today to make plays.  I have the versatility to play anywhere in the secondary.

Alex Khvatov:  What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?

Jay Wright:  I need to work on disguising & rolling into deep half coverage, defending the drag route & patience in off man coverage to not open my hips too early.

Alex Khvatov:  Tell us about your overall career.

Jay Wright:  My overall career would’ve been better and more prolific if I would’ve played all 4 or 5 years.  But getting back on the field, producing during the season & excelling in the all-star bowl games is a testament to my determination & potential.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the highlight of your career up to this point?

Jay Wright:  The highlight of my career was this past year’s homecoming game.  Seton Hill had a history of losing the previous two seasons.  We only won one game.  This game against Gannon, we came together as a team and won a game that came down to the wire.  It was a last-minute safety and touchdown won the game for us.  I probably had my best game of the season & I helped the team stay focused and poised.  It was a great feeling to bring back victory to Seton Hill.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your biggest accomplishment in college that you are most proud of?

Jay Wright:  Getting back on the field after not competing for several years, helping to change the culture and get some wins under our belt this season at Seton Hill University.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the most important trait for a DB?

Jay Wright:  A defensive back has to be a dog & an ultimate competitor.  Very often, we may be the smallest guys on the field, but you have to be a dog and always fight.  Have a short-term memory loss because even Prime Time and Revis got beat.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your favorite NFL team?

Jay Wright:  The NY Jets.  I’m from NYC.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is your favorite NFL player?

Jay Wright:  My all-time favorite NFL player is Revis.  Revis island, he’s literally the reason why I play corner/DB.

Alex Khvatov:  Before the ball is snapped, what are the tendencies that you are looking for from the offense?

Jay Wright:  I watch for a receivers’ splits, to predict certain routes & I watch a WR body language because a lot of the times, it’ll tell you if they’re the first read on the route.  I also watch the QB’s eyes, if right before the snap he looks at the WR I’m guarding, it’s a good chance it’s coming my way.  When I’m in the box, I watch for a linemen’s stance and body weight placement to try and pre determine if it’s a run or pass.

Alex Khvatov:  What players on your team should we keep an eye on for next season?

Jay Wright:  RB Logan Wiland.  The first game of the season, he went for 250 on the ground, but he got injured shortly after.  He didn’t have the amazing season he was going to have.  Logan is a beast, stay tuned.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is the best player that you have faced on an opposing team?

Jay Wright:  Jermaine Wynn from Slippery Rock.  He’s a very explosive slot.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you enjoy most about football?

Jay Wright:  The competitive fire and brotherhood that comes with it.  Competing & winning gives me an adrenaline rush every time.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your hobbies?

Jay Wright:  I enjoy making music, writing poetry, playing the saxophone & reading self-improvement books.

Alex Khvatov:  What five words best describe you?

Jay Wright:  Determined, courageous, leader, self-motivated & intelligent.
