5 Burning Questions
How many QB’s will be selected in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft?
Alex Khvatov: Three quarterbacks will definitely be drafted in the top 10 (Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert), maybe even top 5. We always see teams trading up in the first round in order to select their QB. But I fully expect another QB to be selected at the end of the first round. The two most likely candidates are Washington QB Jacob Eason and Utah State QB Jordan Love. Eason started as a freshman at Georgia. Then he transferred to the Huskies and started this past year. Eason has a big frame and a huge arm. Jordan Love has the size, terrific arm strength and quick release. He needs to improve his decision-making. Four 2020 QB prospects will be drafted in the first round.
Ed Hunt: Five: Burrow, Herbert, Tua, Hurts and Fromm.
What team is most likely to trade up for a quarterback in the first round?
Alex Khvatov: I will go with Miami. Veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick is back for another year, and the organization has stated that Josh Rosen is not going anywhere right now. It is evident that the Dolphins need to find a franchise signal caller in this draft. They have a lot of draft capital. They have three first round picks (No. 5, No. 18 and No. 26) and two second round picks. The No. 3 selection, currently held by the Lions, will be open for business.
Ed Hunt: The Chargers.
How would you compare this 2020 QB class with last year’s group?
Alex Khvatov: Last year’s group had a lot more questions coming in, but they exceeded their expectations. Kyler Murray won Offensive Rookie of the Year. Daniel Jones played better than most people expected him to. Dwayne Haskins improved at the end of the season, showed his potential. But this QB class has a lot more potential. The 2020 QB group at the top is a lot more accomplished. Joe Burrow came out of nowhere this past year and took the CFB world by storm. Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert have many starts under their belt at major programs. There is also depth with this QB class: Jake Fromm, Jordan Love, Jacob Eason and Jalen Hurts.
Ed Hunt: This is a better class. Burrow, Herbert and Tua are elite. Daniel Jones was the only one who had a year worth talking about.
Which QB prospect is not being talked about enough at this point in the process?
Alex Khvatov: Jake Fromm is a winner. He played in three SEC Championship games. I do admit that he took a step back this year. He had a stretch of five straight games where he completed less than 50% of his passes. People are currently focusing too much on his smaller hands (8 7/8) at the Scouting Combine. He makes good decisions, reads the field well and has a quick release. I like his ball placement. He excels on back-shoulder throws and deep outs. He is a big-time leader. I hate to doubt this guy.
Ed Hunt: Jalen Hurts. The kid is a winner and has the speed to make him a dual threat option.
What small school QB should we be keeping an eye on?
Alex Khvatov: Towson QB Tom Flacco is an older prospect at 25 years old. He might not have his older brother’s size or arm strength, but he is an outstanding athlete. He can buy time in the pocket and throws well on the run. He is accurate in the short and intermediate areas. He could be used similar to Taysom Hill in the NFL.
Ed Hunt: Tom Flacco from Towson.
