LB Drew Seers (Lindenwood) Interview - NFL Draft Blitz

LB Drew Seers (Lindenwood) Interview

Drew Seers
Linebacker / Lindenwood

Alex Khvatov:  What are your measurements (height, weight and forty time)?

Drew Seers:  I am 6’1 and 225 pounds.

Alex Khvatov:  How are you currently preparing for the 2020 season with no offseason training?

Drew Seers:  It hasn’t been too much different this year.  I have some weights and barbells.  Our strength coach sends me workouts, and I follow them at home.  I made gains during the quarantine time.  I also have a trainer outside of Lindenwood.  I go to him twice a week.  I am trying to stay active and busy.

Alex Khvatov:  Besides football, what other sports did you play in high school?

Drew Seers:  I played basketball my first two years of high school.  After that, I stuck with football.  I also played soccer when I was young.

Alex Khvatov:  What positions did you play in high school?

Drew Seers:  Linebacker.  On offense, I played slot receiver, TE, RB and FB.  I was also a punt returner, kicker and punter.

Alex Khvatov:  Coming out of high school, what programs showed interest in you?

Drew Seers:  My weight fluctuated a lot.  During my senior year, I was about 200 pounds at 6’1.  I had Lindenwood, Pitt State and Northwest Missouri State.  I had FCS schools that were interested.

Alex Khvatov:  Why did you choose Lindenwood?

Drew Seers:  I wanted to get out of St. Louis, Missouri.  I wanted to meet new people.  Lindenwood kept texting me.  I wasn’t interested in them.  Then I sat down for an hour with the coaching staff and I changed my mind on it.  I committed a month later after signing day.  They recruited me as a person.  They took an interest in me.  It was more authentic than the other programs.  They were recruiting a lot of people in the St. Louis area.  Cade Brister was a good QB in the area.  He was going there.

Alex Khvatov:  How would you describe your overall career?

Drew Seers:  Coming in, I didn’t expect to play right away.  I was undersized and I expected to take a redshirt year.  I ended up beating some people out.  The second game of my freshman year, I was starting.  It was a huge learning year.  My first two years, we were 4-7.  During my sophomore year, I got bigger.  I got up to 220 or 225 pounds.  That year, I got hurt.  I tore my labrum.  I still played in every game and didn’t miss any time.  I had surgery after the season.  I tore it during the fourth game of the season.  I was able to recover from surgery and get my weight back up.  I was the strongest that I have ever been during my junior year.  We had a great year by going 9-4.  We had a great season.  I was healthy.  I had a successful year as a junior.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your strengths?

Drew Seers:  Hustle and getting to the ball.  I am not the strongest, biggest, or fastest player, but my instincts are very good.  I have a knack for finding the ball.

Alex Khvatov:  What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?

Drew Seers:  I need to be better in coverage.  I need to get squared, see what routes are going where and see the field better.  Being more explosive with my initial first few steps.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the highlight of your career up to this point?

Drew Seers:  I will name a few.  My pick-six during my sophomore year.  I caught the ball and took off to score the TD.  It was a memorable play.  Towards the end of my sophomore year, we were sitting with a 3-7 record.  The last game of the season was against Missouri Western.  We were losing at the end of the game.  The score was 23-6 in the fourth quarter.  The offense scored back-to-back, and we got an onside kick.  We were able to score 40 seconds before the end of the game.  We took the lead 27-23.  Our offense was struggling, and then the momentum shifted.  They got the ball, and they moved it into the red zone.  It was the last play of the game.  It was a hook and latter play.  I tackled their guy at the 3-yard line to seal the win.

Alex Khvatov:  How proud were you to be named All-American during your junior season?

Drew Seers:  I didn’t write down being an All-American before the season.  But I worked hard.  It was a cool accomplishment.  I was happy.  It is not my identity.  It means nothing coming into this year.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the biggest lesson that you have taken away from your coaching staff?

Drew Seers:  A lot of the coaches treat the football program like a business.  Our coaching staff show us how to be men off the field.  The stuff that we have done in the community.  They taught us how to love each other and how to care about one another.  Those are the lessons that we will take throughout the rest of our lives.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is your favorite NFL player?

Drew Seers:  I like Saquon Barkley.  He makes plays that you shouldn’t make in the NFL.  On defense, it was Brian Cushing with the Texans.  He was physical and he had no feeling of pain.

Alex Khvatov:  Before the ball is snapped, what are the tendencies that you are looking for from the offense?

Drew Seers:  I am focusing on the formation and the alignment.  I am looking at all five guys on the O-line and the QB.  I am looking whether it will be a pass set or the O-linemen will be coming off the ball.

Alex Khvatov:  What players on your team should we keep an eye on for this upcoming season?

Drew Seers:  Defensively, S Grady Daniels is a big one.  On the offensive side, it is QB Cade Brister.  He went off last year and has two years left.  RB Nash Sutherlin has one year left.  He had two great seasons.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is the best player that you have faced on an opposing team?

Drew Seers:  On defense, it was DT Nathan Shepherd from Fort Hays.  He was the biggest dude.  He was throwing people around.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the most important trait for a LB?

Drew Seers:  Toughness.  You have to be mentally tough and physical.  You are that hybrid player between a safety and a DL.  You have to run with the running backs and hit 300-pound linemen.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you enjoy most about football?

Drew Seers:  Physicality.  I was waiting for the day that my dad would let me play football.  I wanted to hit people.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your definition of a leader?

Drew Seers:  I was a captain my junior year.  I am expecting to be a captain against my senior year.  An effective leader is someone who can influence and have impact on other people.  A leader does things that people don’t want to do.  You have to be the guy that sets the standard and spends extra hours.  I try to set the example for other guys.

Alex Khvatov:  What can we expect from Lindenwood this upcoming season?

Drew Seers:  The goal is winning the national championship.  We are coming off a good 2019 season.  We are confident.  We went to the playoffs and got the win in the first round.  We have weapons to get to the playoffs again.  We are hungry and working.  Late in the season, people will know Lindenwood.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your hobbies?

Drew Seers:  Hanging out with friends, relaxing, and watching Netflix.  I am not a big gamer.  I watch a lot of shows.  Sometimes, I go fishing, but I don’t do it often.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you want to do with your life after your football career is over?

Drew Seers:  I want to get into CrossFit.  It would be cool to extend my athletic career.  I also want to get into real estate, as far as flipping houses and then becoming a real estate investor.  I am majoring in entrepreneurial studies.  Eventually, I want to start my own real estate company.

Alex Khvatov:  What five words best describe you?

Drew Seers:  Passionate, driven, goofy, tempered, and easy-going.
