Week 4 Players Under the Scope

Scouting Blog

Here are the three players that Ed highlighted during week 4.

K.J. Costello, QB, Mississippi State

Costello is a transfer from Stanford who completed 70% of his passes. He does need to make quicker decisions and be aware of mental mistakes but he did have a very good showing against LSU. He is a guy who can have pinpoint accuracy, but overall is hot and cold in terms of accuracy. He also can drop a deeper pass into the box. I noticed Costello had trouble throwing over the LSU defense and that could just be a problem in offensive line play and where he throws the ball in the pocket because Costello stands at 6’5. Another problem was the QB/Center exchange between Costello and center LaQuinston Sharp. One thing that I really like about Costello is the way he plays with the game on the line. I think his play was a big reason Mississippi State upset LSU. He finished Saturday with 623 passing yards and five touchdown passes.

Terrace Marshall Jr., WR, LSU

Marshall is a guy who lines up in the slot for the Tigers. I do think he needs to hustle better on routes. I noticed he does this jump step on his release off the line of scrimmage. He also needs to concentrate better on the catch. He wasn’t getting separation in the Mississippi State game. He didn’t have a good first half. He got better in the second half though. He had a touchdown catch in the 3rd quarter. He showed good speed on the deep ball. He is a guy who can come up with 50-50 balls. He had a nice catch in the fourth quarter on the toe drag in the fourth quarter.

Marvin Wilson, DT, Florida State

Wilson is an impressive prospect. He is a good athlete with a big frame. He is used all around the Seminoles defensive line and that includes NT, 3-4 DE and DT. Despite being moved around, he is mostly a nose tackle for the Seminoles. He has a good punch and a good swim move. I also like his hand fighting. He is a guy who pushes and collapses the pocket in the passing game. What is most impressive about Wilson’s game is the power and strength he has. He also is used on the edge on third downs because of his pass rushing ability. Wilson is a guy who takes on double teams, but can also dominate in the one on ones. Overall, Wilson is a top 5 pick in next year’s draft.
