QB David Moore (Central Michigan) Interview - NFL Draft Blitz

QB David Moore (Central Michigan) Interview

David Moore – Quarterback – Central Michigan

Alex Khvatov:  What are your measurements (height, weight and forty time)?

David Moore:  6’1 and 190.  For my Pro Day, I need to get over 200 pounds.  That is the goal.  I run in the low 4.6’s.

Alex Khvatov:  Besides football, what other sports did you play in high school?

David Moore:  I played basketball freshman and sophomore year.  I stopped after that to focus on football.

Alex Khvatov:  When did you start playing QB?

David Moore:  When I was younger, I played safety, corner and RB.  Around sixth or seventh grade, I started playing QB.  I was enamored by the QB’s.  That is the position I wanted to play.

Alex Khvatov:  Coming out of high school, what programs showed interest in you?

David Moore:  In high school, I had a good amount of offers.  I went on a few visits.  I lived in the suburbs of Dallas in the 9th and 10th grade.  I loved Dallas.  I committed to Chad Morris and SMU.  Then I moved back to Atlanta for my junior year where my family is from.

Alex Khvatov:  Why did you choose Memphis?

David Moore:  I wanted to stay closer to my mom and my brother.  I wanted to be closer to home.  My brother just signed at Georgia Southern.  Coach Norvell ended up taking the job at Memphis.  We had a great relationship, and I accepted his offer.

Alex Khvatov:  How would you sum up your overall career with the Tigers?

David Moore:  I spent two years at Memphis.  It was a learning experience.  We had QB’s Riley Ferguson, Brady Davis was there and Brady White transferred in.  There was a lot of competition.  I learned a lot.  I loved the city of Memphis.  I am still friends with a lot of those guys.

Alex Khvatov:  How did you wind up at a junior college?

David Moore:  Memphis brought in QB Brady White.  We were competing for the starting job.  It seemed like coach Norvell and Brady had a great relationship because they were together at Arizona State.  I decided to leave to get a better opportunity elsewhere.  The transfer portal wasn’t a thing back then.  I went to Garden City junior college in search of a better opportunity.

Alex Khvatov:  Why did you transfer to Central Michigan?

David Moore:  My private QB coach Quincy Avery had a great relationship with coach Charlie Frye and coach McElwain.  They watched my film.  They liked me.  Coach McElwain was a great coach at Florida.  Charlie Frye played in the NFL.  They were invaluable to me.

Alex Khvatov:  Describe your overall career with the Chippewas.

David Moore:  I was there for two years all of 2019 and 2020.  It was challenging from the standpoint of the suspension.  I couldn’t have asked for anything more.  My teammates were great.  Coach Frye and coach McElwain did a ton for me.

Alex Khvatov:  Could you tell us about your suspension?

David Moore:  My suspension started in 2019.  The suspension was a challenge.  When I was at JUCO, I lost a lot of weight.  I was pretty small that first summer.  I was looking to put some weight back on which is normal.  I went to a local GNC and bought some cheap supplements.  I made a mistake by not checking with my strength staff on it.  I know the difference between a protein and a steroid.  I would never look intentionally at a competitive advantage in that way.  It never even crossed my mind.  I was surprised when coach McElwain told me that I failed a drug test for PED.  It was an off brand type of product.  This situation greatly impacted me, not only in the football area.  I thank Central Michigan for their unwavering support the entire time.  I didn’t even gain any weight after I took this supplement.  I was denied my appeal the first time.  Second time, we won the appeal.  We proved to the NCAA the small amount that I took had no impact on my performance.  It correlates with accidental use.  I have talked with NFL teams about it.  The feedback from them was mostly positive.  I am moving past this situation.  I accept that it is my fault.

Alex Khvatov:  Why did you decide to enter the 2021 NFL Draft?

David Moore:  The NCAA has all of these types of rules.  I won the appeal.  I was ready to come back for my sixth year.  I got a call from my lawyers, and they told me that I would still have to file a waiver in order for me to come back.  I wasn’t eligible for the Covid year because I was suspended in 2020.  It could take months to find out whether I can actually play.  I was put in a bind.  I wanted to strike while the iron was hot.  Might as well go out for the draft when people still know me.

Alex Khvatov:  Where are you currently training?

David Moore:  At EXOS in Pensacola, Florida.  My private QB’s coach is Quincy Avery.  He partnered with EXOS.  He is training Jamie Newman and Trey Lance.  He is getting me ready for the pro day on March 23rd.

Alex Khvatov:  You had the opportunity to play at the Tropical Bowl all-star game.  How was that recent experience?

David Moore:  It was great.  It was my first time at an all-star game.  It was very good getting in front of scouts.  I only played half of the season in 2019.  It was encouraging.  I played well at the Tropical Bowl.  I threw a 79-yard TD on the run to WR Myron Mitchell.  It was a post route.  I wanted to give my shutout to him because he was impressive.  It was real football, and I haven’t played in a while.

Alex Khvatov:  You just wrapped another all-star game in Texas.  Tell us about the College Gridiron Showcase.

David Moore:  At CGS, people were excited about me.  I continued to improve my stock there.  They have amazing people there.  We had a few days.  We had a combine type of event.  Now I have built some momentum going into the Hula Bowl.  I didn’t play at all in 2020.  My agent is helping me manage all of these times.  I am looking forward to the Hula Bowl experience.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your strengths?

David Moore:  Pocket passing, being in rhythm, deep ball accuracy and mobility.  I can scramble, avoid sacks and get the first down.  My arm strength and accuracy.

Alex Khvatov:  What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?

David Moore:  The biggest thing for me is putting weight on my frame.  It is not easy, but I am going through the training regimen.  I know that I can put more weight on.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the highlight of your career up to this point?

David Moore:  All of the games, I got a chance to start.  I threw for over 300 yards when I started except when we played against Miami, FL.  I still played well during that game.  Their head coach Manny Diaz gave me a shout for my competitiveness in the media room even though we were on the losing side.  I had my team in position to win.  I had 350 yards at Western Michigan.  Against Eastern Michigan, I was PFF QB of the week.  I started four games and I played in six games.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your favorite NFL team?

David Moore:  I like the Carolina Panthers a lot.  But I would play for anybody.

Alex Khvatov:  Is there an NFL QB that you aspire to play like?

David Moore:  I really like Deshaun Watson.  I love his play style.  He is a pocket guy who can get it done with his legs.

Alex Khvatov:  What players on your team should we keep an eye out for next season?

David Moore:  We have two stud receivers in Kalil Pimpleton and JaCorey Sullivan.  RB Kobe Lewis had 1,000 yards in 2019.  On the defensive side, Willie reed at safety.  He was first team all-conference this year.  CB Dishon McNary and safety Devonni Reed.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the most important trait for a QB?

David Moore:  Just leadership and service.  You need to have the mental capacity.  You are the leader of the team.  You need to sacrifice and lead.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you enjoy most about football?

David Moore:  100% camaraderie.  You put in so much sweat and hard work with your teammates to achieve a common goal.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your hobbies?

David Moore:  I hang out with my friends and play video games.  I like to be outside.  I enjoy reading non-fiction.  I like psychology books like Carl Jung.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you want to do with your life after your football career is over?

David Moore:  I want to help people as much as I can.  I want to serve others whether it would be counseling or something else.  I got my bachelor’s degree in community developing and minor in psychology.

Alex Khvatov:  What makes you unique?

David Moore:  My ability to connect with people.  I am able to communicate with anyone.  Also my compassion for others.

Alex Khvatov:  What five words best describe you?

David Moore:  Competitive, intelligent, compassionate, athletic, and strong.

Alex Khvatov
