2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: QB Chase Brice, Appalachian State

2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: QB Chase Brice, Appalachian State

Chase Brice started his career at Clemson before transferring in 2020 to Duke. After an unflattering season with the Blue Devils, Brice looks to conclude his collegiate career with Appalachian State. There, he competed for a Sun Belt championship and looked the part of a potential developmental quarterback in the NFL. He played well throughout the Shrine Bowl and Hula Bowl weeks, solidifying his stock.

Chase Brice

QB – Appalachian State Mountaineers

HT: 6020
WT: 237
WING: 7728
ARM: 3118
HAND: 928
DOB: 1/27/1998
Year: Super Redshirt Senior
High School: Grayson (Loganville, GA)
HS Rating: 3 star (0.8818)

Projected Draft Grade: Developmental QB3

Projection: 6th/7th Round

I see a little bit of upside, but not a lot from Brice. He can clean up his feet a good bit and that will help some of the inconsistencies with his throw. After that, perhaps some work on his touch ball could help him, and then it’s understanding the game. Regardless, there’s some upside with him, and a good chance to develop into a long term QB2 in the league.

Has done a great job staying healthy throughout his career. Hasn’t missed a start over the last three years.

Chase Brice’s scouting report

Quarterbacking Ability (65)

Arm Talent: 20

  • Arm Strength (6.5/10): Average NFL arm strength. Has the ability to drive the ball to the short-to-intermediate levels of the field, but doesn’t offer too much more outside of that. Doesn’t have the strength to push the ball too far down field.
  • Touch Ability (2.5/5): Struggles a little bit with his touch ball. Isn’t consistently accurate and extends his release.
  • Release (4/5): Lightning quick release. Ball comes out ridiculously fast. Extends his release when he tries to throw with touch.

Accuracy/Placement: 25

  • Accuracy (8/15): Can deliver accurate balls short through all sorts of pressure. Otherwise, a very box accurate quarterback. Struggles to get the ball to the receiver in the intermediate to deep levels of the field. Not consistently accurate off-platform.
  • Placement/Vision (7/10): Placement is inconsistent, but he more than flashed the ability to fit the ball through some tight, tight windows. Really struggles to place the deep ball. Flashed accuracy on the deep bucket throw.

Pocket Presence: 10

  • Pocket Positioning (3.5/5): Positions well initially off of his drop. Stands in there and takes some massive hits to deliver a good throw.
  • Pocket Maneuverability (3/5): Tends to bolt from the pocket much too quickly.

Footwork: 10

  • Consistency (3/5): Platform and base is relatively inconsistent.
  • Quickness (3/5): Feet are a bit heavy, but suitable for the NFL level. He can get through his drops and set but it’s average at best.

Athleticism (20)

Mobility: 12

  • Outside of the pocket (4.5/7): Offers some ability with his feet. Struggles to make defenders miss outside of the pocket.
  • Downfield Ability (4/5): Average runner while moving downfield in the NFL. Doesn’t have the athletic ability to be very effective.

Improvability: 8

  • Natural Improvability (2/4): I don’t see a ton of improvability from Brice.
  • Play Extension (2/4): Tends to force the ball rather than try to extend the play. I don’t see a lot of work trying to keep the structure of the play in place.

Intelligence (15)

Football IQ/Field Vision: 10

  • Football Intelligence (3.5/5): Flashes the ability to use his eyes to move defenders. Works the field well and understands concepts vs defenses well.
  • Ability to read pre-snap (3.5/5): Shows the ability to read pre snap very well and make the proper reads consistently.

Overall: (69) – 5th/7th Round Pick
