Brandon Gibson Interview
Wide Receiver - Washington State

By: Alex Khvatov

2/10/09

Alex Khvatov:  What are your measurements (height, weight and forty time)?

Brandon Gibson:  6’0”, 205 and I ran a 4.46 40 in high school.

Alex Khvatov:  What other sports did you play in high school?

Brandon Gibson:  I ran track and played basketball.  I actually played one year of basketball at WSU.  It was my freshman year.  I redshirted.  It was kind of stressful.  I had a lot to do in terms of school.  It was time consuming.

Alex Khvatov:  Coming out of high school, what programs showed interest in you?

Brandon Gibson:  Washington State was the only major school to show interest.  They were the only school to officially offer me a scholarship.

Alex Khvatov:  What made you choose Washington State?

Brandon Gibson:  It was the 2004 season and Washington State just beat Texas in the Holiday Bowl.  They were just coming off three 10 win seasons.  They aired it out a lot.  They played fast and threw the ball a lot.  I liked that about them.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your strengths on the football field?

Brandon Gibson:  I do a pretty good job of making plays.  I am solid in running routes, attacking the ball and those are my best attributes.

Alex Khvatov:  What areas of your game do you need to improve upon?

Brandon Gibson:  Maybe I need to work on being a better technician.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your favorite NFL teams?

Brandon Gibson:  I would probably have to say the NY Giants, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Oakland Raiders and the Seattle Seahawks.

Alex Khvatov:  Who are your favorite players?

Brandon Gibson:  I like to watch Anquan Boldin and Steve Smith.  They are two of my favorite players.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is the one NFL player that you would compare your game to?

Brandon Gibson:  I really don’t know.  Reggie Wayne is a guy that I play like.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is the toughest player that you have faced during your career?

Brandon Gibson:  Antoine Cason from Arizona, now he is with the Chargers.  He was really fundamentally sound.  He was always near the ball.  He was tough.  He understands the game of football.

Alex Khvatov:  Which underclassmen on your team should we keep an eye on in the future?

Brandon Gibson:  RB James Montgomery.  He definitely has a future at the next level.

Alex Khvatov:  Tell me about your Senior Bowl experience.

Brandon GibsonI showed that I can play with anybody and play at a high level.  I just enjoyed myself.  The first day, I had to adjust to the speed of the game at practice.  Everything was so fast.  Hopefully, I was able to prove that I am a pretty good all-around receiver and one of the top guys in the draft.

Alex Khvatov:  Did you get a chance to bond with a player from another team at the Senior Bowl?

Brandon GibsonNot really.

Alex Khvatov:  How are you preparing for the Scouting Combine?

Brandon GibsonI am training at the training facility in Westlake, California.  I am trying to get stronger and faster at this facility and work on my 40 time.

Alex Khvatov:  Do you think 40 time is overrated?

Brandon GibsonYeah.  Some players play at a different game speed.  But 40 time will determine your draft position in some regard.  If I run badly then I would go in the lower rounds.  If I run well then I could go higher or where I am slotted right now.

Alex Khvatov:  Describe your senior season.

Brandon GibsonIt was definitely frustrating.  We didn’t perform to the level expected of us.  It was a learning process.  I think that seniors learned how to fight through a tough season.

Alex Khvatov:  What were your expectations from a team and an individual standpoint coming into the 2008 season?

Brandon GibsonI just wanted to move the ball consistently.  Be a leader and help our offense.  I was hoping that we get to a Bowl Game.  We certainly didn’t get that many wins.

Alex Khvatov:  What was your best game this season?

Brandon GibsonOregon was the best game that I had this season.  Blocking wise, I caught the ball well and my route running was good.  I had 10 catches and over 100 yards.  I got into a rhythm, and Marshall got the ball to me.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the highlight of your football career up to this point?

Brandon Gibson:  I would say the funniest thing was the 2007 Apple Cup.  Our offense distributed the ball well in that game.  Washington returned an opening kickoff for a touchdown.  Louis Rankin ran it back.  I was able to catch a nice deep pass and take 40 yards to the endzone.  It was a big win that helped us out.

Alex Khvatov:  You are an all-time leader in career receiving yards and you are ranked second on the schools’ career receptions list, what do those records to mean to you personally?

Brandon GibsonIt is exciting, but records are made to be broken.  I am not too worried about that.  I love the game and I am a big time competitor.

Alex Khvatov:  What separates you from all of the other players at your position?

Brandon Gibson:  I am tough.  I play through injuries.  Basically I am consistent.  I run routes and I catch the ball well.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you enjoy most about playing football?

Brandon Gibson:  I enjoy the team atmosphere.  Winning is fun and competing.

Alex Khvatov:  Your uncle Vaughn Williams played in the NFL, has he given you any advice about the pro game?

Brandon Gibson:  Value your time in the NFL, play hard and have fun.

Alex Khvatov:  You were born in Germany, could you tell me about that experience in a few words.

Brandon Gibson:  I was only there for 7 or 8 months.  My dad was in the army and he was stationed there.

Alex Khvatov:
What is the one thing in your daily life that you can't live without?

Brandon Gibson:  Getting an hour nap in.

Alex Khvatov:  What makes you unique?

Brandon Gibson:  I am a nice individual.  I go out of my way to help people in life.  I am friendly.

Alex Khvatov:  If you could have dinner with one person, who would it be and why?

Brandon GibsonMichael Jordan.  The life lessons that he has learned in basketball and business life are valuable ones.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you like to do in your free time?

Brandon Gibson:  I go to movies, play video games and read comics.  My favorite comic book is Batman.  I like action movies and some comedies.  The best movie that I have seen lately would probably have to be Dark Night.

Alex Khvatov:  Finish the sentence, Brandon Gibson is….

Brandon Gibson:  Hard-working, likes to have fun, student of the game and a good person to be around.
