When the Saints come marching...Down?

We are getting down to crunch time.  Less than 2 weeks away from the biggest day in the NFL off-season and it is virtually impossible to determine the first round projections until the next biggest trade in announced.  That's right, the Bush sweepstakes seems to be decided, so we must now focus our attention of the race for Matt Leinart.  Although others may argue that the #2 spot of the board may belong to another player, it is simply the position most advantageous for a team seeking a future leader of their franchise.

For those who continually surf the web looking for information, I am trying to compile a 1-stop shopping method for all your mock draft needs, at low, low prices.....

Based on the first round draft order and the QB situation on some teams, I strongly believe the Saints are in an excellent position to improve their football club by sliding down the draft board.  Let's examine the most notable options for the Saints and the suitors of Matt Leinart's services.

A List:

Buffalo Bills:  This franchise has been in search of a legitimate franchise Quarterback since Jim Kelly retired.  Recently, they vaulted ahead of the Green Bay Packers to acquire JP Losman; however, it appears the team has no confidence in Losman and has turned to Craig Nall as a potential starter.  Craig Nall has meaningless statistics in his career, based on his "mop-up" duties in Green Bay.  Based on this assessment, the Bills are well poised to make a jump up the draft board and a move would cost 1200 points on the pick value chart, which is a small price to pay to have a Quarterback with exceptional potential and a low bust factor.

Minnesota Vikings:  The Vikings seem confident in the abilities of Brad Johnson; however, he is the QB of the present and father-time is definitely not on his side.  Matt Leinart could learn from a Super Bowl champion and inherit an excellent offence, suited for his pocket-style play.  At 1650 points many may perceive this as a high price to pay.  Nevertheless, a quick review of their FA acquisitions puts them in an ideal situation to become perennial leaders of the appalling NFC North.  The number of draft picks held by the Vikings could result in "The Trade 2".  Perhaps the curse of Herschel Walker still haunts the Minnesota faithful.

Baltimore Ravens: The Ravens simply make the A-list, based on their urgent need to replace Kyle Boller.  Boller has proven he is not amongst the elite QB's in the league and Billick cannot afford to take on another project.  Leinart starts in week 1 and the team moves towards their ultimate goal - Super Bowl 40.....Well maybe Super Bowl 42 or 43.  Unfortunately for Ravens fans, their team needs and the 1450 points are needed elsewhere.

B List:

Arizona Cardinals:  The Cardinals have the best young offence in the NFL - on paper.  Although moving from #10 isn't much of a stretch, I do not feel the team is desperate enough to move up for a franchise QB.  Kurt Warner is nearing the end of his up and down career and a later round selection will most likely be used to select a potential replacement.  I have been high of this team for 2 seasons and for the third year in a row; I feel this team is ready to make a play-off run.    1330 points doesn't seem much to trade for a great prospect, I just believe the team uses the #10 pick to become competitive now.  Let's not forget they have an excellent opportunity to select either Cutler or Young.

Kansas City Chiefs: This is my long-shot option.  Trent Green isn't getting any younger and the team could use a replacement QB.  The Chiefs are in a tough division and although they feel they are worthy of a play-off spot, were unsuccessful at squeezing into a Wild card spot.  The team needs to focus on improving and remaining consistent in the future, rather than rallying owners to expand the play-offs.  Moving up from #20 seems unrealistic; however, it would not be the last crazy trade.

Honorable Mentions:

Tennessee Titans:  Recent decisions have led everyone to believe they are looking for a QB.  No reason to move from #3.  This team has too many issues right now.

New York Jets:  The scary situation at QB has been resolved in New York.  There is no need to panic.  Worse case scenario, Vinny gives it 1 more try.

Oakland Raiders:  Let's give Andrew Walter a shot at the job, before we right him off.  As for Aaron Brooks, best move the Saints made.

Denver Bronco's:  Denver is in the same situation as Kansas City.  However, with 2 first round selections, they could move up.  If they do, I suspect it is to select Chad Jackson. You heard it here first.
