Miami @ FSU: Game Overview

By: Rob Bryant

9/6/05

Well all know by now that Florida State won 10-7, but If someone would have told me that Miami QB Kyle Wright played very well and looks like the making of a future NFL quarterback and that TE Greg Olson looks like the next Jeremy Shockey I would have thought Miami won in a blow out.

But no, what lousy coaching on behalf of Miami. I have been contending that Coach Coker is lousy for the last couple years but I think this game proves that beyond a doubt. Penalties and special teams play doomed Miami, which I feel had better over-all talent on the field. Penalties galore, too many men on the field, not enough men on the field, illegal substitution, players ejected, running into the punt returner, botched snaps, wasted time outs. After Miami botched a snap and missed a field goal with 2:16 left to play they had to just sit back and watched FSU run out the clock because they wasted all their time outs.

Speaking of coaches, why did FSU leave QB Drew Weatherford in the game? The kid was horrible. Who cares if Xavier Lee wasn't ready. He couldn't have been worse that Weatherford. That game just goes to show how important defense and special teams are.

FSU's defense looked outstanding; a couple new stars emerged on that defensive line. Meet Kamerion Wimbley 6-4 235 and Broderick Bunkley 6-3 291. I had to check Wimbleys weight 2-3 times and I still question if he is only 235 pounds, he looks like he weighs about 270 to me. Ernie Simms, wow, what an athlete.

Back to Miami, their Achilles heel is obviously their coach, special teams and offensive line. That offensive line looked lousy; they gave up a record 9 sacks. Yes even Eric Winston disappointed me. That was the first that I had seen him since he injured his knee early last year. He didn't look like he spent much time in the weight room, he had small, soft arms and was a step slow all night. Devin Hester, well he didn't play like the future star that many think he is. Miami will still win a lot of games this year because they have a lot of talent on the field, but their weakness has been exposed.
