Miami Pro-Day Report

By: Rob Bryant

3/6/06

Saturday was a busy day in the NFL Draft World. The Miami Hurricanes had there Pro Day on 4 March 2006 and all 32 teams sent representatives. There were approximately 100 scouts on hand to watch the workouts:

1. CB  Marcus Maxey was the big surprise and he showed why he beat out Devin Hester for the starting cornerback slot last year.  He recorded a 41.5-inch vertical jump and a clocking of between 4.40-4.42 seconds in the forty. Some scouts even clocked Maxey in the 4.3's. His 3-cone time of 7.60 was not impressive though. Maxey has nice size at 6-3 200 pounds and has the skill to play corner or safety. He could be one of the steals of the draft.

2. DT Orien Harris continued his spectacular free fall, after not working out at the combine; Harris looked lethargic at his pro day. There is a little discrepancy on whether he benched or not, some sources say he didn’t lift and some say he completed 25-reps on the bench. He ran in the 5.20-second range and posted a 30-inch vertical.  Once looked at as a 1st round draft pick, he will be lucky to be a first day pick at this point.

3. CB Kelly Jennings had an awesome combine, running a 4.43 forty so he didn’t run again during the Pro Day, but he did 12-reps on the bench and had a 40-inch vertical. He also looked crisp in his positional drills. What was really amazing though was his short shuttle time of 3.96 and his 3-cone time of 6.88, both world class times.

4. WR Sinorice Moss injured his quad last week at the NFL Combine, where he ran a 4.39 forty, so he didn’t try to run again at the pro day, but he had a lofty 42-inch vertical and a 10'-3" broad (long) jump.

5. LB Roger McIntosh had an excellent run, clocking as fast as 4.55 in the forty.

6. KR Devin Hester did drills as both a receiver and a corner. There was a wide discrepancy on his run times, some scouts clocked him at 4.37 and some had him at 4.41-seconds in his first forty, and then in his second, some had him at a blistering 4.28 and then some at 4.32. I guess it all depend on who was holding the stop watch. In another confusing statistic he had a terrible short shuttle run of 4.20 seconds, but an excellent 3-cone time of 6.78 seconds.

7. FB Quadrine Hill is small for a fullback at only 6-2 220, so he worked out mainly as a running back where he reportedly looked pretty good running a 4.53 forty, completing 16 reps on the bench and had a 38-inch vertical jump.

8. Eric Winston’s stock has been steadily climbing this post season, at 6-6 315 pounds he had an outstanding 40 yards sprint at the Combine of 4.98 seconds, so he didn’t run again. He is more of a speed guy than a power guy and it showed, he got on the bench but only completed 22 reps, however his vertical jump of 33-inches and long jump of 8’ 3” shows that his knee is 100% healed from his 2004 injury.

9. If only LB Leon Williams’s production could match his athletic ability, he had a great workout, with a 35-inch vertical jump and running 4.54-seconds in the forty. He also had a 7.08 second 3-cone run time.

10. G Tony Tella looked a little slow, he isn’t giant, but has decent size at 6-5 298 pounds. He ran a 5.43 forty, but recorded a decent 4.8-short shuttle.

11.  DE Javon Nanton measured in at 6 foot-3 inches and 251 pounds and will probably be converted to linebacker in the NFL, but he didn’t have a great workout. He ran a 4.80 second forty, 33.5-inch vertical and completed 22-reps on the bench. He did drills as both a linebacker and defensive end.

12. LB Thomas Carroll measured in at 6-3 and 5/8th inches and 239 pounds, but had a horrible 40 yard sprint time of 4.86 and 4.93.  He also only completed 16 reps on the bench and a 33-inch vertical. I don’t know if he is injured or what. But those times just won’t cut it at the next level.

13. S Greg Threat measured in at 5-11 and ¾ inches and 197 pounds and had two poor runs of 4.61 and 4.63 in the forty, he had a 35-inch vertical and looked like a weakling with only 10-reps on the bench.

14. OT Rashad Butler didn’t set the world on fire with his speed, running once (40) at 5.30 and again at 5.34. He also ran a 7.80 second 3-cone drill, but slipped.
