Ok, maybe every sports league isn't perfect. I
have always thought the NFL was as close as it
could get.... until this season. This year was
not without it's off the field drama. As for
the subject of TO....NO Comment....Next
Question.....
The highlights of the pre-season were the
anguish faced by Jamal Lewis, who was recently
released from jail and unable to commit 100% to
training camp...My heart goes out to Jamal...How
can you not have a soft spot for highly paid
criminal athletes, who provided a mediocre
season in a contract year, to prove his best
yards have passed him. As a matter of fact many
current and future stars are becoming more
involved in legal antics off the field and there
may just be enough to film a sequel to "The
Longest Yard".
At mid-season, we are more consumed with the
newest episode of the "Love Boat", observed off
the coast of Minnesota than those selected to
the Pro Bowl. Mind you, these selections are
becoming more of a popularity contest as the NFL
does anything it can to give Michael Vick the
spotlight.
Sure, maybe as a Packers fan, I was left a
little bitter with this NFL season. Needless to
say, I don't believe I am alone. At least the
Super Bowl would provide comfort for a crazy
year....
Alas, Super Bowl XL passes as a huge
disappointment. If you break down the game
film, I believe it can be translated into 6
plays:
* The dreadful Pass Interference call
against Darrell Jackson, negating the ever so
important first TD.
* The horrendous call of Big Ben's TD
run.
* The fake reverse and TD pass from
Randal El to Ward.
* Willie Parker's record-setting TD run.
* The questionable below-the-waist hit by
Matt Hasselbeck.
* The mysterious holding call on Sean
Locklear.
Is anyone seeing a pattern? As I mentioned
before, I am a Packers fan and was cheering for
Big Ben to prove to the world that he is better
than Eli. As a matter of fact, he has more SB
rings than the Manning clan. I am just curious
that after a year of blow calls and questionable
officiating how the league would provide a
keystone cop approach to the biggest game of the
year and disappoint a vast majority of its
viewers.
I guess we should have seen the writing on the
wall, when Tom Brady flips the coin. Tom Brady?
Doesn't he still play in the league? They had a
host of former Super Bowl MVP's and Tom Brady
flips the coin. Nothing against Tom, as my best
friend is a Patriots fan, but whose brainchild
was that? Why not let Michael Vick flip the
coin, that way he can say he played a part in
the Super Bowl. Bart Starr, Joe Namath....
Heck, with the focus on off field legal
problems, Ray Lewis was around to flip the
coin. Why not a member of the Armed Forces? I
guess professional sports is tiring of thanking
the men and women in uniform for their
courageous efforts at home and abroad.
Enough self-pity. Super Bowl XLI is right
around the corner. I will continue to work on
my mock draft, predict the impact of off-season
deals and make my predictions for next year's
season and before you know it, we will all be
sitting in front of the TV, awaiting the next
Super Bowl, forgetting the Super disappointment
of last year.
