Day 2 Practice Notes (North + South)

2018 Senior Bowl: Day Two Report (Wednesday Practice)

South Team

WR James Washington (Oklahoma State)

During Wednesday’s practice, Washington demonstrated why he is the top WR at the Senior Bowl.  He is so physical and tough.  He uses his 210-pound frame and fights through contact.  He displays great hand/eye coordination and catches the ball consistently away from his frame.  He excels on slants and streaks, but he has shown the ability to run different routes during the first two days.

OG Isaiah Wynn (Georgia)

Wynn’s transition from left tackle to guard has gone very smoothly here at the Senior Bowl.  He is so quick out of his stance.  He has sustained his blocks well.  He is very strong and powerful.  His hand placement has been outstanding.

QB Mike White (Western Kentucky)

After struggling during Tuesday’s practice, White was clearly the best QB on the South squad today. He has the size and a strong arm.  He got the ball out quickly and made good decisions.  He was accurate to all areas of the field and showed good touch.  However, he needs to avoid locking on to his primary read (something that he did during his career) and work through those progressions.

WR Tre’Quan Smith (Central Florida)

He showed good ball skills and a knack for creating separation in the one on one’s.  I was impressed with his overall route running ability today.  Smith came out after his junior year, but he is here at the Senior Bowl because he graduated from UCF.

RB Darrel Williams (LSU)

He showed his physical nature by hitting the hole with authority today.  He runs with low pad level, and his vision was outstanding.  He is a tough, downhill runner.

CB Levi Wallace (Alabama)

He was the best CB during Wednesday’s practice.  He got physical and used his long arms to disrupt receivers’ timing at the line of scrimmage.  He has great length and good feet.  He needs to bulk up significantly at the next level (only weighed in at 176 pounds).

OLB Uchenna Nwosu (USC)

Nwosu was always around the ball whether it was against the pass or the run.  He showed his speed and quickness.  He used his hands well to disengage from blockers.  His effort and nonstop motor really stood out throughout the practice session.

North Team

QB Josh Allen (Wyoming)

I saw another inconsistent practice for Allen here at the Senior Bowl.  He can thread the needle into tight coverage on one play, and then have you scratching your head on the next play.  He has forced balls into coverage and has been inaccurate on intermediate and deep throws.  He threw an INT on the deep ball during the team portion.

QB Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma)

He was the most accurate QB during Wednesday’s practice.  It doesn’t always look pretty, but he has a knack for making plays.  He makes quick decisions and gets the ball out quickly.  He will take chances, and it will get him in trouble at the next level because of his average arm strength.

QB Luke Falk (Washington State)

He was accurate on short throws.  However, he looked hesitant.  He needs to make quicker decisions. His field vision is very average.  He doesn’t trust what he is seeing.

QB Tanner Lee (Nebraska)

He had a tough afternoon practice.  He misfired on a number of intermediate and deep throws.  He forced throws into coverage and made bad decisions, which resulted in a few balls being intercepted.

OG Will Hernandez (UTEP)

He looked dominant in the one on one’s.  Defensive linemen had a tough time getting around him.  He is a tough, physical and tenacious OL.  He plays with a nasty demeanor.  He shows great strength, balance and sustains his blocks well.  He looks like a top 15 pick.

WR DaeSean Hamilton (Penn State)

Braxton Berrios flashed at times, but Hamilton put together the most consistent practice out of all of the WR’s on the North team.  He displayed reliable hands and ran very precise routes.  He is more quick than fast.  He showed a knack for getting separation in close quarters.  After putting together a good week at the Shrine Game, he continues to make plays in Mobile.

TE Mike Gesicki (Penn State)

Gesicki needs to add more bulk to his frame, but he has good length and a huge catching radius.  He has displayed outstanding hands and body control throughout the practice session.  He uses his body well to shield defenders away from the ball.

CB Christian Campbell (Penn State)

He had an impressive day two practice.  He has good size and fluid hips.  He changes directions well. He was extremely effective in press coverage by using his hands at the line of scrimmage.  He intercepted a deep ball during the scrimmage portion.

DT Justin Jones (NC State)

He made a number of plays behind the line of scrimmage.  He showed quickness, a variety of pass rush moves and a nonstop motor.  He held his ground well against the run and played with good leverage.
