Alex Light
Offensive Lineman – Senior
Richmond
Alex Khvatov: What are your measurements (height, weight and forty time)?
Alex Light: My height is 6’5, weight is 310 and I have no idea what my forty time was at the pro day. During training, I was running in the 5.25 – 5.3 range.
Alex Khvatov: Where are you currently training for the NFL Draft?
Alex Light: I have been training at Richmond. I plan to go to Delaware and train with the buddy of mine there for the last three weeks.
Alex Khvatov: Were you satisfied with your Pro Day results?
Alex Light: I wasn’t too happy with my running tests. I was too tight while running. My height and weight were good. My jumps were good. I was happy with the individual drills.
Alex Khvatov: How would you describe your overall experience at the College Gridiron Showcase all-star game in Texas?
Alex Light: It was good. I enjoyed it. We were there for four or five days. We did interviews the first two days. The next couple of days we had practice. I was able to play against bigger competition like Rutgers, Oregon and Washington State. I was pretty happy with what I demonstrated there. I got positive feedback from the scouts.
Alex Khvatov: What is the biggest thing you took away from that all-star event?
Alex Light: Being able to play against bigger competition. Those guys were definitely bigger than what I faced in college.
Alex Khvatov: Coming out of high school, what programs showed interest in you?
Alex Light: I only had two offers. Richmond and VMI. During my junior year of high school, there was interest from SEC schools and Cincinnati. But they stopped showing interest my senior year. Richmond and VMI stuck with me.
Alex Khvatov: Why did you choose Richmond?
Alex Light: Honestly, I didn’t want to take the military route and go to VMI. Richmond was the other offer and I took it. I have never heard about the University of Richmond before. I am from Salem, Virginia, which is about 20 minutes away from Blacksburg.
Alex Khvatov: Describe your overall career.
Alex Light: Coming in as a freshman, I expected to redshirt. But the coaches told me that I was good enough to play. I played two snaps. During my sophomore year, I started at RT. They bumped me to LT my junior year. I played guard and LT my senior year. I came from a winning program in high school. I am glad that we made runs in the playoffs at Richmond. Senior year was difficult. We went
6-5. It was my worst record ever in football. It was a challenge to get through the season.
Alex Khvatov: How honored were you when you were recognized as an All-American this year?
Alex Light: One of my goals was to get as many accolades as I could. I made Third-Team All-American and First-Team All-CAA.
Alex Khvatov: What are your strengths?
Alex Light: I can pass block. I move my feet well and have good arm length. I have been working on my hands during training, and it is one of my strengths now. My size and versatility stand out. I played four different positions in college. I know that I can play all five mentally. I have taken snaps from under center in practice. I have made an emphasis on practicing at center during my training. Most teams see me as a guard or center at the next level.
Alex Khvatov: What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?
Alex Light: My hip explosiveness. I have been working on my first step. I am trying not to lunge in the run game.
Alex Khvatov: What is the highlight of your career up to this point?
Alex Light: Two games stick out. The College GameDay against JMU in 2015. In 2016, we beat UVA by 17 points. We came out on top both times.
Alex Khvatov: What is your favorite NFL team?
Alex Light: I enjoy watching football.
Alex Khvatov: Who is your favorite NFL player?
Alex Light: I don’t have one. I studied a lot of Zack Martin and Tyron Smith film before my senior year.
Alex Khvatov: What is the most important trait for an OL?
Alex Light: Unselfishness. We are not recognized when we are doing a good job. We get noticed when we mess up. You have to be tough mentally and physically. You have to do your job every day.
Alex Khvatov: What players on your team should we keep an eye on for next season?
Alex Light: WR Tyler Wilkins, WR Dejon Brissett and DL Andrew Clyde.
Alex Khvatov: Who is the best player that you have faced during your career?
Alex Light: DE/OLB Pat Afriyie from Colgate is quicker than anybody I have ever faced. His approach mentally was unique. He knew where we were going at all times. He did everything right.
Alex Khvatov: What do you enjoy most about football?
Alex Light: It is the only sport where you can get physical without getting punished for it. I enjoy the physicality.
Alex Khvatov: What are your hobbies?
Alex Light: I like to play basketball and lift weights. I was a three-year letterman for a varsity basketball team in high school. We won the state championship my junior year. I played center.
Alex Khvatov: What do you want to do with your life after your football career is over?
Alex Light: Strength and conditioning coach or a personal trainer. I want to be around the game.
Alex Khvatov: Finish the sentence, Alex Light is….
Alex Light: A hard worker.
