Darius Phillips
Cornerback – Senior
Western Michigan
Alex Khvatov: Tell us about this Senior Bowl experience.
Darius Phillips: It’s been a great experience. Meeting new players who are going through the same process as you. Meeting a lot of scouts and GM’s. Being able to connect with other people.
Alex Khvatov: What do you want to show NFL teams this week?
Darius Phillips: I want to prove that my size is really not a factor. I can play inside or outside.
Alex Khvatov: What are your strengths on the field?
Darius Phillips: My man-to-man cover skills. I also make plays as a corner or in the return game.
Alex Khvatov: What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?
Darius Phillips: I am trying to improve my technique. I need to become more of a technician instead of just relying on my athleticism.
Alex Khvatov: Who was the toughest WR that you have played against?
Darius Phillips: My former teammate Corey Davis.
Alex Khvatov: How did you wind up at Western Michigan?
Darius Phillips: I was committed to Syracuse at first. I was recruited by Tyrone Wheatley. Then he went to the Bills, and I de-committed. When Coach Fleck got the job at Western Michigan, I just went there.
Alex Khvatov: What is the biggest difference between college and NFL coaching?
Darius Phillips: It is more fast-paced. It is the biggest difference.
Alex Khvatov: Describe your overall career at Western Michigan.
Darius Phillips: I had a pretty fair career individually. I am proud of my team. We didn’t do as good as we wanted to this year. But our senior class was the winningest class in the history of Western Michigan. We accomplished a lot of goals. We went to the Cotton Bowl and won the MAC championship. We went to our first bowl game.
Alex Khvatov: What is your major at Western Michigan?
Darius Phillips: My major is in criminal justice. I will graduate on April 28th.
Alex Khvatov: Finish the sentence, Darius Phillips is….
Darius Phillips: Determined.
