2019 East/West Shrine Game

East Report – Day 3 (Wednesday Practice)

By: Alex Khvatov

DL Michael Dogbe (Temple) – has lined up outside and inside here this week.  He is very strong, plays with a good motor and his bull rush is impressive.  During the scrimmage, they couldn’t contain him.  He was blowing up a number of run plays and getting into the backfield repeatedly.  He was the most impressive player during Wednesday’s practice for the East squad.

DE Kyle Phillips (Tennessee) – played five-technique in Vols 3-4 defense.  He is versatile enough to play in multiple fronts.  He holds his ground well at POA against the run.  He used his quickness off the edge and displayed an effective inside move in the one on one’s.  He was always causing havoc in the backfield during the scrimmage portion.

WR Jesper Horsted (Princeton) – big, strong WR who has shown the ability to get off press coverage.  He has displayed good hand/eye coordination.  He catches the ball away from his body and displayed better route running ability on day three.

CB Jimmy Moreland (James Madison) – undersized, smooth corner.  He has shown the wheels to turn and run with speedy receivers downfield.  He is also feisty and won’t back down against a physical receiver despite giving up 4 or 5 inches in many instances.

RB Ty Johnson (Maryland) – after having a breakout sophomore season, he never became the focal point in Maryland’s offense.  He is an explosive RB with very good speed.  He has displayed good cutback ability and he has shown good hands out of the backfield.  My only concern is that he always looks for that big play and tries to bounce it outside on every run.

QB Taylor Cornelius (Oklahoma State) – struggled with his accuracy the first two days.  However, he was the most consistent QB in practice for the East squad on Wednesday.  He forced a throw at the end of practice that could have been picked off.  He has the size, arm strength and a quick release.  He showed accuracy to all levels of the field, better footwork and threw well on the run.

DE Mathieu Betts (Laval) – a speed rusher who has flashed his quickness off the edge.  He won his share of battles in the one on one’s.  He has consistently shown a nice inside counter move that has kept OL off balance.  His motor never stops.
