Alex Khvatov: What are your measurements (height, weight and forty time)?
Chase Hancock: I am 6’1, weigh 225 and run a 4.66 (will be a 4.5 come pro-day).
Alex Khvatov: Where are you currently training for the NFL Draft?
Chase Hancock: I’m training at Fit-Speed, Weston FL.
Alex Khvatov: Describe your overall experience at the 2019 Tropical Bowl.
Chase Hancock: I really enjoyed the Tropical Bowl. The staff cared about my well-being and made sure I was good in every aspect (food, health, living quarters, etc.). I was provided opportunities that I would not have gotten had I not attended the bowl. The information they passed on to me was priceless. I learned so much about the NFL process and I’m grateful to have been chosen to attend. I also appreciate the time the coaches spent talking with me and preparing me for what awaits in the future.
Alex Khvatov: Who was the best player that you faced during the all-star game weekend?
Chase Hancock: I do not remember the exact names of the players, but all of the guys I faced were good players.
Alex Khvatov: What is the biggest thing that you will take away from the Tropical Bowl?
Chase Hancock: The biggest thing I took away from the bowl game is that I felt confident in the midst of other players from all over the country. There is still work to be done, of course.
Alex Khvatov: Coming out of high school, what programs showed interest in you?
Chase Hancock: West Virginia University and Marshall University were the bigger D-I schools showing interest in me. Both offering preferred walk-on positions. The University of Charleston, Concord, WV State and other D-II/D-III schools were also interested. They offered full rides and partial scholarships. I have three younger brothers and being the oldest, I knew Mama wouldn’t be able to pay for all of us to attend college. After praying about it, I passed up the scholarships, walked out on faith, and went to Marshall as a walk-on expecting to earn a scholarship.
Alex Khvatov: Why did you choose Marshall?
Chase Hancock: Everyone has a school for them, and Marshall was the choice for me. I felt right at home as soon as I stepped on campus.
Alex Khvatov: What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?
Chase Hancock: I need to not be so self-critical. I’m a perfectionist. I need to work on getting better with my hands and getting off of blocks.
Alex Khvatov: Describe your overall career.
Chase Hancock: I came in as a walk-on, earned a scholarship, consistently worked to better my teammates and myself, looked to make an impact on my community, and ultimately leave my mark on Marshall University.
Alex Khvatov: What is the highlight of your career up to this point?
Chase Hancock: The highlight of my career was being the first person to sack Lamar Jackson during his Heisman Trophy year.
Alex Khvatov: What is your biggest accomplishment in college that you are most proud of?
Chase Hancock: I’m most proud of graduating and setting a good example for those who will come after me.
Alex Khvatov: What have you learned the most from your coaching staff?
Chase Hancock: I’ve learned that through thick and thin, we’ve got each other’s best interests and have one goal in mind. Win for one another.
Alex Khvatov: What is your favorite NFL team?
Chase Hancock: My favorite team is the Steelers.
Alex Khvatov: Who is your favorite NFL player?
Chase Hancock: My favorite player is Clay Mathews.
Alex Khvatov: What is the most important trait for a LB?
Chase Hancock: The most important trait for a LB would be having a great football IQ. You’re put in a leadership role to line yourself up as well as others, and execute the gameplan.
Alex Khvatov: Before the ball is snapped, what are the tendencies that you are looking for from the offense?
Chase Hancock: It’s all based off of film. Everyone has a tendency. You might even try to hide it, but eventually it’s going to show up on film. So, I look for light fingers or stances of the O-line and TE, the depth of the RB, a handclap or show of hands from the QB to see what cadence he likes or tempo he prefers. These are just a few things I look at while preparing for and playing against the opponent.
Alex Khvatov: What players on your team should we keep an eye on for next season?
Chase Hancock: Keep an eye on Omari Cobb, Jaquan Yulee, Obi Obialo, Isaiah Green and Brenden Knox.
Alex Khvatov: Who is the toughest player that you have faced on an opposing team?
Chase Hancock: Lamar Jackson, hands down.
Alex Khvatov: What do you enjoy most about football?
Chase Hancock: I enjoy working hard and making plays.
Alex Khvatov: What is your definition of a leader?
Chase Hancock: A leader is someone who walks the way he talks. A leader will tell you how things are supposed to be even if it’s not the most popular option. A leader also holds you accountable. A leader is a standard for others to look up to.
Alex Khvatov: What are your hobbies?
Chase Hancock: I love to read books. Always have a book on me. I also paint for fun, and trying to learn to play the guitar.
Alex Khvatov: What do you want to do with your life after your football career is over?
Chase Hancock: After football, I would love to be a pediatrician. I love children.
Alex Khvatov: What five words best describe you?
Chase Hancock: I am a hardworking, self-motivated, gritty, selfless and smart.
