OL Delroy Baker (Indiana) Interview

Delroy Baker
Offensive Lineman
Indiana

Ed Hunt:  What are your measurements? (Height, Weight and 40 time)

Delroy Baker:  I’m 6’6, 325lbs and I will wait till pro day to find out 40 time.

Ed Hunt:  What is your best position on the offensive line?

Delroy Baker:  The position I’ve thrived the most at is tackle, but it would be easy to make guard my primary.

Ed Hunt:  What positions can you play on the offensive line?

Delroy Baker:  Left tackle, left guard, center, right guard and right tackle.

Ed Hunt:  Who is the best player you have faced on an opposing team?

Delroy Baker:  Nick Bosa from Ohio State.

Ed Hunt:  Coming out of high school, which schools showed interest in you?

Delroy Baker:  17 offers, everybody in Florida.  My big three were Florida, Indiana and Missouri.  Florida was my dream school at the time.

Ed Hunt:  What made you ultimately choose Indiana?

Delroy Baker:  It was a trip up in the summer.  It was the feel I got in the locker room.  It felt like my locker room back home.

Ed Hunt:  What are your strengths?

Delroy Baker:  Length, size, 34.5-inch arms and quickness compared to other guards.

Ed Hunt:  What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?

Delroy Baker:  Bringing more power to my one on one blocks.  Pulling.  I haven’t had much practice pulling.

Ed Hunt:  Describe your overall career.

Delroy Baker:  Pretty much I rode in early 2013.  Came into spring ball.  I played second string behind Jason Spriggs.  The next year, I got switched to right tackle.  I played behind Spriggs again.  Junior year, I started at tackle.  Senior year, I got out there.  I got out there at tackle and guard and then last year I played all positions.  I was the most versatile.

Ed Hunt:  What is the highlight of your career at this point?

Delroy Baker:  I feel like when you play in the Big 10, the initial opportunity was great.  I got to play against Nick Bosa.

Ed Hunt:  I noticed you are a mauler in the run game.  What do you attribute this to?

Delroy Baker:  I want to say my size especially when I moved to guard.  I have long arms and really quick-twitch combined with a good weight.  I am pretty explosive especially on down blocking situations.

Ed Hunt:  What have you learned the most from your coaching staff?

Delroy Baker:  I want to say the versatility part of my game.  I remember being a freshman moving positions.  I couldn’t understand why they were moving me around.  Then I became the guy who could play different positions.

Ed Hunt:  Is there a role you have played on special teams thus far in your career?

Delroy Baker:  No, other than field goal.

Ed Hunt:  What is your favorite NFL team?

Delroy Baker:  The Packers.

Ed Hunt:  Who is your favorite NFL player?

Delroy Baker:  I want to say Tyron Smith from the Cowboys.

Ed Hunt:  What’s the most important trait for an offensive lineman?

Delroy Baker:  I want to say mentality as a whole.  I think you need to have a tough mentality.  You need a heady mentality.  Personally, when I am going through the week and watching the film, I like to look at the defense.

Ed Hunt:  Before the ball is snapped, what tendencies are you looking for in that defense?

Delroy Baker: First, look at the two safeties. Then I look at the receivers and then look at who is covering them. I look if there is an Apex player. Then I am looking at the defensive line. It is important to know the tells the defense is telling you.

Ed Hunt:  What players on your team should we keep an eye on for next season?

Delroy Baker:  Stevie Scott, Michael Penix and Reakwon Jones.

Ed Hunt:  What do you enjoy most about football?

Delroy Baker:  I want to say it’s a mix of two things.  The camaraderie and when you come out on the field and see what happens.  In big moments, you kind of rely on that.  Seeing how well you can use your mind against your opponent.

Ed Hunt:  Who is your biggest role model and why?

Delroy Baker:  My mom.  She kind of showed me how to handle adversity.  She showed me that even though there is a bad situation, there are always multiple ways out.  I grew up in a single parent household.

Ed Hunt:  What is your definition of a leader?

Delroy Baker:  Someone who can influence the people around them and take them to their shared goal that everyone else around them has.

Ed Hunt:  What do you want to do with your life after football?

Delroy Baker:  I got my degree in psychology.  If not social psych, then working with children.

Ed Hunt:  What five words best describe you?

Delroy Baker:  Altruistic, loyal, flexible, comedic and thoughtful.

Ed Hunt:  Who will win the Super Bowl next year?

Delroy Baker:  Whatever team I am on.
