P Stone Wilson (FIU) Interview - NFL Draft Blitz

P Stone Wilson (FIU) Interview

Stone Wilson
Punter
FIU

Ed Hunt:  What are your measurements? (Height, Weight and 40 time)

Stone Wilson:  I’m 5’10, 184 lbs and I run a 4.5.

Ed Hunt:  Did you kick field goals as well?

Stone Wilson:  I do, yes.  I haven’t had to kick any field goals in a college game.

Ed Hunt:  What other positions did you play in high school other than punter?

Stone Wilson:  In high school, I played wide receiver and punter.

Ed Hunt:  Who is the best player you have faced on an opposing team?

Stone Wilson:  Maryland had a punt returner who was an absolute freak.  The Miami punt returner took one back against us too.

Ed Hunt:  Coming out of high school, which schools showed interest in you?

Stone Wilson:  Tennessee, Georgia, Florida State and Auburn.  Pretty much, every D-I school in Florida.  My final decision was between Florida State and FIU.

Ed Hunt:  What made you ultimately choose FIU?

Stone Wilson:  I understand college football is more business oriented.  I went to a place that would offer me a full scholarship.

Ed Hunt:  What are your strengths?

Stone Wilson:  Mentally, I am strong in facing mental adversity.  I have a good reputation in the weight room as well.

Ed Hunt:  What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?

Stone Wilson:  I am always trying to improve on consistency.  I feel that is a strength of mine.  Strength and speed as well.

Ed Hunt:  Describe your overall career.

Stone Wilson:  A true journey.  We haven’t had the best program.  Then ultimately, my senior year we had our best record.  Just seeing how things changed.

Ed Hunt:  What is the highlight of your career at this point?

Stone Wilson:  The highlight of my career was going to the Bahamas and getting our ninth win.  It was my last game as an FIU football player.

Ed Hunt:  I noticed you have a good hangtime on your punts.  What do you attribute this to?

Stone Wilson:  I would have to say our kicker helped me.  He took a lot of what he knew and taught me.  His name is Sean Young.

Ed Hunt:  What have you learned the most from your coaching staff?

Stone Wilson:  From a technique perspective, they can’t teach me much.  They taught me about buying into the program.  And our last year’s record is proof.

Ed Hunt:  What is your favorite NFL team?

Stone Wilson:  I don’t particularly have an NFL team.  My dad is a Dolphins fan, even though we are from Tampa.

Ed Hunt:  Who is your favorite NFL player?

Stone Wilson:  Pat McAfee or Thomas Morstead.

Ed Hunt:  What’s the most important trait for a punter?

Stone Wilson:  To be able to brush off something if it doesn’t go your way.  Perseverance.

Ed Hunt:  Before the ball is snapped, what tendencies are you looking for in the opponent’s punt return team?

Stone Wilson:  Typically, I look for how far back the punt returner is.  I try to look where to punt the ball.  I also look and see if it’s a rush look or a regular return.

Ed Hunt:  What players on your team should we keep an eye on for next season?

Stone Wilson:  I would say, Austin Maloney.  He is one of our receivers.  Anthony Jones.  He was shot in a drive-by and scored five touchdowns in a bowl game.

Ed Hunt:  What do you enjoy most about football?

Stone Wilson:  Building a relationship with all the guys around you.  You learn a lot about your friends and teammates when you go through losses together.

Ed Hunt:  Who is your biggest role model and why?

Stone Wilson:  My dad.  His hanger got closed down.  He got hired by Delta again.  A lot of the time, he spends time away from us for work.  He is very loving.  But he does what he has to do to secure for his family.

Ed Hunt:  What is your definition of a leader?

Stone Wilson:  The guy who was always minding his business and going right to work.  You don’t have to be athletically inclined.

Ed Hunt:  What do you want to do with your life after football?

Stone Wilson:  I originally went into school as a nursing major.  They told me it was impossible to do nursing and football.  I changed my major to communications.  I want to do something in health.  My mother and my grandmother were nurses.

Ed Hunt:  What five words best describe you?

Stone Wilson:  Generous, hard-working, passionate, caring and tough.

Ed Hunt:  Who will win the Super Bowl next year?

Stone Wilson:  The Browns.
