2019 Scouting Combine Winners and Losers

Winners:

D.K. Metcalf had quite the combine.  He scares us with his 1.6% body fat percentage.  If anything, that is too low.  He also ran a 4.33 40-yard dash while putting up 27 reps on the bench.  He also had a broad jump of 134 inches.

Phil Haynes, an offensive lineman from Wake Forrest, put up 33 reps on the bench.  He also weighed in at 322 pounds.  He is a monster and so I would look for him to be drafted in the late rounds based on strength and size.

David Long was a winner in the 3-cone and short shuttle drill.  He ran a 6.25 in the 3-cone drill and a 3.97 short shuttle.  He was the only person to break 4 minutes in the short shuttle other than Taylor Rapp.  This is a corner that can cut and has short area quickness.

Zedrick Woods won the 40-yard dash.  He ran a 4.29 40-yard dash, which makes him the only player to have sub 4.3 speed.  He also put up 19 reps on the bench.  The Mississippi product showed a rare combination of elite speed in a position that usually comes third to corners and receivers in the 40-yard dash.

Montez Sweat made himself some money showing astronomical numbers for a defensive end.  He ran a 4.41 40-yard dash with a 4.29 short shuttle and a 36-inch vertical.  He is a freak of an athlete with his wingspan as well.

Juan Thornhill also brought himself up a round or two in the draft with a 44-inch vertical, 4.42 speed, and 141-inch broad jump.  I like his tape as well and think he will be an eventual starter.

Losers:

Zach Gentry, a tight end from Michigan, was a loser in this year’s combine.  Despite being 6-8, he only put up 12 reps on the bench, had only a 29-inch vertical and had a 7.4 flat 3-cone.  We expect better athleticism from tight ends these days.

Devin Singletary was my frontrunner at running back until this weekend.  His height ended up being 5-7 1/2 and he only ran a 4.66 40-yard dash.   He also ran a 7.32 in the 3-cone, which worries me for a small back.  He has great tape, but the worry is he will drop now due to his measurables and testing numbers.

Malik Gant did not have a good day at the combine.  His 7.45 3-cone is scary for a safety who will have to move around and change directions.  He also had a 4.6 40-yard dash, which makes me question his speed altogether.

Cece Jefferson did not have a good day at the 3-cone drill.  He ran a 7.50 three-cone drill.  That is a bit worrisome, especially since he is pegged as a 3-4 outside linebacker.  To add to that, he ran a 5.02 40-yard dash.  Maybe he is a better fit as a down lineman in a 4-3 system.

Rock Ya-Sin had a 7.31 3-cone timing.  That is a bit concerning for a cornerback, especially for a cornerback who is supposed to go high.  I can’t see a scenario where he is drafted in the first round now.

Nate Herbig is a big guy at 335 pounds.  My worry is whether he is a good enough athlete to play in the NFL.  He had the worst short shuttle at 5.04 and his 40 time was 5.41.
