WR Cody Demers (Merrimack College) Interview - NFL Draft Blitz

WR Cody Demers (Merrimack College) Interview

Cody Demers
Wide Receiver
Merrimack College

Alex Khvatov:  What are your measurements (height, weight and forty time)?

Cody Demers:  5’10, 190 and 4.49 laser 40 time at the BSN national scouting combine in Indianapolis.

Alex Khvatov:  Tell us about this BSN combine.

Cody Demers:  It was an unbelievable experience.  I received an invite.  The goal was to make sure that I can be at the top in every drill we did.  I showed that I could play at the NFL level.  My numbers match up with the receivers at the NFL Scouting Combine.  I was in the mix at my position group with the Lucas Oil combine.  I had 20 reps on the bench, 4.1 on the 20-yard shuttle, broad jump – 9’6 and a 34-vert.

Alex Khvatov:  Where are you currently training for the NFL Draft?

Cody Demers:  At Exceed Performance in Massachusetts.

Alex Khvatov:  Describe your overall experience at the National Bowl all-star game.

Cody Demers:  It was a great experience to get out in front of NFL and CFL scouts.  I played against other D-II guys.  We had lots of meetings.  We had conferences with scouts and agents.  They told us how the whole process works.

Alex Khvatov:  Coming out of high school, what programs showed interest in
you?

Cody Demers:  I went to a central catholic high school in Massachusetts.  I had a good junior and senior year.  I wasn’t heavily recruited.  I was one of the top receivers in Massachusetts.  I was a little undersized and not as quick.  I had Merrimack, Assumption and Stonehill.  Sacred Heart, Central Connecticut State and New Hampshire offered me a preferred walk-on spot.  I took my visit to those schools.  I was trying to help my mom out financially.  I wasn’t getting that much money from Stonehill.  It came down to Merrimack and Assumption.

Alex Khvatov:  Why did you choose Merrimack?

Cody Demers:  I knew that their offense ran through the slot position.  I knew that they put me in the best position to succeed on the team.  I knew coach Curran.  He helped train my high school football team.  It was the best fit for me.

Alex Khvatov:  Describe your overall career.

Cody Demers:  Playing for coach Curran was unbelievable.  The intensity that he brought to practice and games.  I grew a lot as a man and as a football player.  I became the starter after the first game.  I was a starter all four years.  I learned so much more in college and adjusted to the pace of the game.  I elevated my game.  During my junior year, I was a top 3 receiver in yards per game, TD’s and receptions in the conference.  As a senior, I led in receiving yards per game, second in TD’s and first in receptions in the league.  We struggled with injuries, but I was a part of some great wins.  I built great relationships with guys on my team.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your strengths?

Cody Demers:  Quickness and the ability to find holes in the defense.  I have dependable hands.  I secure the ball and make moves on the field.  I bring so more than just being a receiver.  I have been a punt returner and I have played on kickoff returns.  I can fill that role on special teams.

Alex Khvatov:  What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?

Cody Demers:  Improve on my route running.  I need to be more precise at the top of my route.  I have been working on my top-end speed.  I am quick and shifty.  I have improved my straight-line speed significantly.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the highlight of your career up to this point?

Cody Demers:  My individual highlight is being first team all-conference in NE10 and making the all-region team.  I became a top three receiver in Merrimack history.  A team highlight was when we were playing New Haven.  We haven’t won at their field in 10 years.  We beat them.  It was a memorable moment for the team.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your biggest accomplishment in college that you are most proud of?

Cody Demers:  I got my civil engineering degree.  It was a rigorous schedule.  It was my biggest accomplishment in college.

Alex Khvatov:  What have you learned the most from your coaching staff?

Cody Demers:  I came in as a freshman and I remember coach Curran telling us.  It stuck with me every day.  How you play the game of football is how you live your life.  Give your best effort, don’t cut corners.  Be a good friend, good teammate and good son. Football is a correlation of how you live your life.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your favorite NFL team?

Cody Demers:  I am a die-hard Patriots fan.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is your favorite NFL player?

Cody Demers:  Julian Edelman.  I read his book.  I love his story.  His journey wasn’t the easiest.  He had a big chip on his shoulder.  I play the game like him.  He is my role model.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the most important trait for a WR?

Cody Demers:  Being dependable, so a QB can rely on you in the key moments in the game.  You have to build a good line of trust.  You also have to have sure hands.

Alex Khvatov:  Before the ball is snapped, what are the tendencies that you are looking for from the defense?

Cody Demers:  I am a slot guy.  I look at where the safeties are lined up, single high or cover 3.  I check out the positioning of the defense.  I try to make the defense show their hand.

Alex Khvatov:  What players on your team should we keep an eye on for next season?

Cody Demers:  Our freshman QB this past season, Chris Carter.  He is very mature.  He has a strong arm.  He is a great teammate and he is smart.  Slot WR Marquis Spence.  He is a playmaker.  He has great hands and great shake.  He is someone you can count on.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is the best player that you have faced on an opposing team?

Cody Demers:  Offensively, WR Deonte Harris from Assumption.  It was tough to play against him.  He can make a play at any point in the game.  Defensively, one of the toughest guys was Ryan Doherty from Stonehill college.  He was a whip LB.  He was a good player.  I played against him my freshman and sophomore year.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you enjoy most about football?

Cody Demers:  It is amazing how emotional the game can be.  It is satisfying when you can make a big play.  Everyone executed and did their job.  It is gratifying how the play worked.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your hobbies?

Cody Demers:  Working out and training.  I work at a country club.  I work at a restaurant as a bartender and waiter.  I also like to spend time with my friends and family.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you want to do with your life after your football career is over?

Cody Demers:  After football, I want to get an EIT license.  It is an engineer in training license.  I want to get into structural engineering and possibly build bridges.

Alex Khvatov:  What five words best describe you?

Cody Demers:  Hardworking, driven, optimistic, determined and respectful.

Alex Khvatov:  When is your Pro Day?  What are your expectations?

Cody Demers:  Coach Curran hasn’t confirmed the date of our Pro Day yet.  But I will be doing Harvard’s pro day as well.  It will be on March 20th.  I want to run in the low and mid 4.4’s.  One or two more reps at the bench than what I put up at the Combine.  Hopefully, I will get under a 4.00 in the 20-yard shuttle, 9’8 or 10 on the broad and below a 7.00 in the 3-cone.
