CB DeMarcus Owens (New Mexico State) Interview - NFL Draft Blitz

CB DeMarcus Owens (New Mexico State) Interview

DeMarcus Owens
Cornerback
New Mexico State

Alex Khvatov:  What are your measurements (height, weight and forty time)?

DeMarcus Owens:  5’10, 190lbs, 4.48.

Alex Khvatov:  Where are you currently training for the NFL Draft?

DeMarcus Owens:  I am currently training with DOU Fitness.  This is a training facility located in Dallas, Texas that is ran by a man named John Nwisienyi.  John has worked with me and helped me obtain numbers during the pro day that I have never reached in the past.  When it came to my on the field performance and DB drills, I worked with a man by the name of Lewis Hill, he also did an amazing job preparing me.

Alex Khvatov:  How would you describe your pro day?

DeMarcus Owens:  I would say that my pro day was very successful.  I was able to set personal records and grab the attention of a few teams as well.

Alex Khvatov:  Were you happy with your overall pro day results?

DeMarcus Owens:  Yes, I was very happy with my vertical, broad jump, bench reps, my 40 and also my DB drills.

Alex Khvatov:  What were some of your times from the pro day?

DeMarcus Owens:  My 40 was a 4.48, my vertical was 40-inches, my broad was a 10’6 and I also had 17 reps on the bench.

Alex Khvatov:  How would you describe your overall experience at the Tropical Bowl?

DeMarcus Owens:  It was a good experience because I was able to compete with people from all over the country.  Coach LittleJohn was also a great coach to learn from and play under.

Alex Khvatov:  Coming out of high school, what programs showed interest in you?

DeMarcus Owens:  University of North Texas, Colorado State, Tulsa University, and of course New Mexico State.  There were a few others, but these were the main schools.

Alex Khvatov:  Why did you choose New Mexico State?

DeMarcus Owens:  I chose New Mexico State because when I came on my official visit, they really sold me on coming in and changing the culture.  I felt like I could be a part of something huge, which we accomplished in 2017 when we became bowl eligible for the first time in 57 years.  It was huge for the city and the university.  I was glad that I got to be a part of it.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your strengths?

DeMarcus Owens:  My biggest strength is the fact that I’m not complacent.  I’m always looking for an opportunity to grow and learn as a player and as a person.

Alex Khvatov:  What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?

DeMarcus Owens:  I need to believe what I see.  If I see something that I recognize from film study, I need to act on it more consistently.

Alex Khvatov:  Describe your overall career.

DeMarcus Owens:  Successful.  I was able to compete at a high level for four straight years and grow not only as a player, but as a person too.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the highlight of your career up to this point?

DeMarcus Owens:  Hands down, going to the Arizona Bowl and winning it in 2017.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your biggest accomplishment in college that you are most proud of?

DeMarcus Owens:  Being able to take on a leadership role on the team.  It doesn’t seem like much, but it was huge for me.

Alex Khvatov:  What have you learned the most from your coaching staff?

DeMarcus Owens:  In order to be a leader, you can’t worry about being liked.  Also the chip on the shoulder mentality is what we lived by, so that was instilled in every player.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your favorite NFL team?

DeMarcus Owens:  Whoever gives me an opportunity honestly.  But if I have to choose one, it would be the Dallas Cowboys because that is my home team.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is your favorite NFL player?

DeMarcus Owens:  I am a big fan of Chris Harris Jr.  His story is unbelievable.  He came in as an undrafted free agent and now he’s a pro bowler.  He’s also similar in size, and I like his style of play.  He is a technician for sure.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the most important trait for a CB?

DeMarcus Owens:  Having a short-term memory is huge.  Playing CB, you’re going to get beat at times, but you can’t dwell on it instead make a play.  I also think technique is huge as a CB.

Alex Khvatov:  Before the ball is snapped, what are the tendencies that you are looking for from the offense?

DeMarcus Owens:  I look at the down and distance.  Then I look at the alignment and the split of the receiver and where he lines up, whether he is on the top of the numbers or bottom of the numbers.  I also look at the formation of the offense.

Alex Khvatov:  What players on your team should we keep an eye on for next season?

DeMarcus Owens:  There are a ton of playmakers on the team.  People like Josh Adkins, Jason Huntley, Christian Gibson, OJ Clark on the offense.  There are also some big time players on the defense like Roy Lopez, Cedric Wilcots, Javahn Fergurson and a bunch of others.  The biggest name you should look out for is Shamad Lomax.  He is a versatile playmaker at the defensive back position and should have a break out senior year.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is the best player that you have faced on an opposing team?

DeMarcus Owens:  I’ve been able to compete against big time players like Laquon Treadwell, Christian Kirk, Antonio Calloway and DaMarkus Lodge.  One receiver that I really had the opportunity to go back and forth against was Antonio Gandy-Golden at Liberty University.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you enjoy most about football?

DeMarcus Owens:  I enjoy making a big play because it’s like everything you trained for and worked for paid off in that moment.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your definition of a leader?

DeMarcus Owens:  Someone that can make other people around him better.  Help them reach their potential and an ultimate goal.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your hobbies?

DeMarcus Owens:  My hobbies consist of hanging out with friends and family.  Playing basketball or playing video games at times.  Working out or going to the movies.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you want to do with your life after your football career is over?

DeMarcus Owens:  Hopefully become a business owner and an investor.

Alex Khvatov:  What five words best describe you?

DeMarcus Owens:  Goal-oriented, hard-working, ambitious, determined and leader.
