Overall Impressions (2019 NFL Draft)

2019 NFL Draft

Overall Impressions

By: Ed Hunt

The 2019 Draft took place last weekend and there were quite a few surprises. Some of my underrated players, were drafted earlier like LJ Collier and some players were never drafted like Bruce Anderson and Andrew Wingard. Some players fell in the draft like WR Kelvin Harmon and LB D’Andre Walker while some were drafted high like Dionte Johnson and Tytus Howard.

There was a lot of speculation about whether Kyler Murray was going to be drafted first. The speculation is over, and Kyler Murray is the first pick in the draft. It was also surprising to see Daniel Jones taken sixth overall, although there was a rumor that the Giants liked him. This year, teams didn’t trade up for quarterbacks, but instead stayed home and waited for the one to fall to them.

The runs were a bit surprising. The offensive linemen drafted in the first round seemed more like second round guys, while the guys in the second round seemed more like first round guys on tape. It also seemed like a lot of receivers dropped or went undrafted like Antoine Wesley and Jakobi Meyers. I already mentioned Kelvin Harmon in that list.

Overall, there was a run on offensive linemen in the second round.  A lot of defensive tackles and 3-4 defensive ends were drafted overall. This was a good year for defensive interior players.

The early losers are the Giants and the Raiders. The Giants puzzled me taking Daniel Jones with the No.6 selection and then taking a nose tackle at No.17. The Raiders didn’t make a splash despite having three first round picks taking DE Clelin Ferrell, RB Josh Jacobs and S Johnathan Abram. I don’t know what the Raiders see in Johnathan Abram, but they are going to want to get better coverage from a first-round safety. The winners were the Redskins for getting Haskins in the middle of the first round. I also think the Bills did a good job drafting Ed Oliver, Cody Ford and Devin Singletary. They are a quarterback away from being a playoff contender, but it’s too early to move on from Josh Allen.
