RB Deonte Glover (Shepherd) Interview - NFL Draft Blitz

RB Deonte Glover (Shepherd) Interview

Deonte Glover
Running Back / Shepherd University

Alex Khvatov:  What are your measurements (height, weight and forty time)?

Deonte Glover:  5’10, my playing weight is between 212 – 215 pounds and my last forty time was a 4.46.  I am planning to get it down to a 4.3.

Alex Khvatov:  Describe your overall experience at the Tropical Bowl in Daytona Beach, FL.

Deonte Glover:  It was a great experience playing with guys who are nationally respected from D-I.  It was an honor and good exposure.  I am always overlooked most of the time, but it was a great chance for me to prove a point.  It was a fun experience.  I was also invited to the Dream Bowl and CGS.  I got exposure at the Tropical Bowl.

Alex Khvatov:  What did you want to show scouts at that all-star event?

Deonte Glover:  I wanted to show them that I am an all-purpose guy.  I can run, catch out of the backfield, can block, return kicks and punts.

Alex Khvatov:  Where are you currently training for the NFL Draft?

Deonte Glover:  I am at Grossetti Performance in Newcastle, PA.

Alex Khvatov:  Coming out of high school, what programs showed interest in you?

Deonte Glover:  I was recognized by Marshall, JMU, Cornell and Fordham.  But they didn’t offer me.  Six to seven D-II schools including Shepherd offered me.  My head was to go to a D-I school.

Alex Khvatov:  Why did you choose West Virginia?

Deonte Glover:  West Virginia showed up and offered me a preferred walk-on spot.  I loved it up there, but it was hard financially for my mother.  I spent a year there.  It was a dream for me to play for a D-I team.

Alex Khvatov:  Why did you transfer to Shepherd?

Deonte Glover:  It was 20 minutes from home.  I could save money by living at home.  My grades were good.  I had 4.3 GPA.  I got all of the academic scholarships that I could get.  The football program covered the remaining balance.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your strengths?

Deonte Glover:  My versatility.  I am not a one-dimensional player.  I can block, catch, make tackles on special teams and change games as a returner.

Alex Khvatov:  What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?

Deonte Glover:  Blocking the DE’s.  It is tough for any RB to do.  I need to work on it.  I can do the one on one’s against the TE’s.

Alex Khvatov:  Tell us about your overall career.

Deonte Glover:  I had over 2,100 all-purpose yards my senior year.  I pride myself on that.  The main goal was to get in the playoffs.  We beat IUP.  We beat them in the last few seconds.  We lost to Slippery Rock in the second round.  Their QB was really good.  He won the Harlon Hill award.

Alex Khvatov:  What was the biggest reason your breakout senior year?

Deonte Glover:  I wasn’t put in the position to show my full ability earlier.  My coach Tyler Crounse was able to do that.  He got the best out of me.  We had different positional coaches before.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the highlight of your career up to this point?

Deonte Glover:  I scored five TD’s against Bloomsburg.  It was the grittiest game of the season.  It was super cold.  It was an even fight throughout the whole game.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your biggest accomplishment in college that you are most proud of?

Deonte Glover:  My biggest accomplishment was my senior year.  I showed it on the field and in the classroom.  I was an academic All-American my senior year.  Every semester, I made the Dean’s list.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the biggest thing that you will take away from your coaching staff?

Deonte Glover:  They instilled a lot of manly things in us.  It is all about owning up to your mistakes and taking accountability for yourself.  It is all about hard work and not cutting corners.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is your favorite NFL player?

Deonte Glover:  Marshawn Lynch.  I love his personality.  He is a funny dude.  I love the way he plays.  He is a tough RB.  Tom Brady is a close second.  He tries to do everything to perfection.  I am also a perfectionist.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the most important trait for a RB?

Deonte Glover:  Being able to slow down the game while the game is moving.  Analyze and break and process about what is going on in front of you.  It comes with vision, studying film and repetition.

Alex Khvatov:  Tell me about your family.

Deonte Glover:  My mom is Canadian, and I lived in Canada for 5 years.  My mom ran track and she competed at the junior Olympics.  My brother runs track for Glenville.  My dad played all sports in high school.  I was a three-sport athlete in high school.  I ran track, played football and basketball.

Alex Khvatov:  Before the ball is snapped, what are the tendencies that you are looking for from the defense?

Deonte Glover:  I got to figure out which front they are in.  Process and analyze how the play will go.  Then I look at the triangle.  If the LB is about to blitz, if the corners are bailing, SS is coming to the box and whether another safety is bailing out.  Most of the time, a RB has to pick up that LB if he is blitzing.

Alex Khvatov:  What players on your team should we keep an eye on for next season?

Deonte Glover:  MLB Chrys Lane had a hell of a season.  WR Greg Leonard is working his butt off.  He will breakout.  QB Tyson Bagent.  FS Antonio Fox had a tremendous year.  DB Michael Blackman-Herbert plays multiple roles for us.

Alex Khvatov:  How will Shepherd look next year?

Deonte Glover:  They will look amazing.  They have a lot of the players coming back.  They should have a great season.  I expect a playoff run.  They are eager and hungry.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is the toughest player that you have faced on an opposing team?

Deonte Glover:  Slot WR for Slippery Rock is Jermaine Wynn.  He is shifty with the ball in his hands.  He is tough to tackle in space.  He can change the game.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you enjoy most about football?

Deonte Glover:  I enjoy the bonds with the teammates.  The brotherhood.  I met friends in little league and even though we don’t live close, but the bond is still there through football.  We still stay in touch to this day.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your definition of a leader?

Deonte Glover:  A leader doesn’t have to lead verbally.  He leads by example.  He picks up teammates when they are down.  He doesn’t dwell on the losses, he moves on.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your hobbies?

Deonte Glover:  I read books whether it is financial or life books.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you want to do with your life after your football career is over?

Deonte Glover:  I got my bachelor’s in criminal justice and a minor in psychology.  I am working on my master’s in business administration.  I have two classes left to take online.  I am highly interested in law enforcement.  I am not a one-dimensional player and person.

Alex Khvatov:  What five words best describe you?

Deonte Glover:  Highly ambitious, relentless, versatile, detail-oriented and faith.
