Quinton Maxwell
Quarterback / IUP
Alex Khvatov: What are your measurements (height, weight and forty time)?
Quinton Maxwell: Height: 6’2 1/4, weight: 221.5 and 40-yard dash: 4.79.
Alex Khvatov: Where are you currently training?
Quinton Maxwell: I have trained for the last six weeks at TEST Football Academy in Martinsville, New Jersey.
Alex Khvatov: When is your Pro Day?
Quinton Maxwell: My pro day will be on March 16th in Pittsburgh, PA. I have also been invited to throw at Penn State’s pro day as well as West Virginia University. I will be throwing at those pro days on March 18th and 25th respectively.
Alex Khvatov: What is your main goal for the Pro Day?
Quinton Maxwell: My goals for the pro day is to match my PR’s for all of my drills, and possibly set new PR’s. Secondly, I would like to have a consistent session throwing the football with good timing and anticipation with the receivers that I am throwing too. Overall, I want to put my best foot forward for the NFL, CFL and XFL Scouts that will be in attendance and give them a reason to consider taking a chance on me.
Alex Khvatov: What was the biggest thing that you took away from the FCS Bowl?
Quinton Maxwell: I was fortunate enough to play in the FCS and National Bowl. The biggest take away that I had from the game is that I can play with the best of the best in the country and I am good enough to compete at the level needed to be a professional football player. I also discovered some areas of my game that I can improve upon and I believe these last six weeks at TEST have helped me accomplish that.
Alex Khvatov: How would you describe your overall experience at the Tropical Bowl in Daytona Beach, FL?
Quinton Maxwell: My overall experience at the Tropical Bowl was good. I had the opportunity to compete in front of numerous NFL and CFL scouts, surrounded by some of the best division I and FCS players in the country. I am thankful for the opportunity to be one of the small school invites to the bowl game and represent IUP.
Alex Khvatov: Coming out of high school, what programs showed interest in you?
Quinton Maxwell: Coming out of high school, I was not very heavily recruited. I went to a small high school near Kansas City, Missouri. I received two division I offers: Ohio University and Wyoming University. Also, I had one division II school offer me a scholarship and that was The University of Central Missouri in the MIAA.
Alex Khvatov: Why did you choose Ohio University?
Quinton Maxwell: I chose Ohio University because at the time, it was my only division I offer because I committed before to the University of Wyoming. I also felt that it was the best option to continue my education as well as my football playing career and use that to catapult me into a potential professional playing career.
Alex Khvatov: Why did you transfer to IUP?
Quinton Maxwell: I transferred to IUP because I was beat out by another quarterback at Ohio University. The quarterback that replaced me went onto have a great career at Ohio University. The problem was, we had the same amount of eligibility left. When I decided to leave, it was on the basis that I knew I wanted to play what could be my final year of football, and I knew I was good enough to play somewhere. IUP was the first school to offer me once I entered the transfer portal. The coaching staff and players that would be surrounding me all felt like the best fit possible for me, so I decided to take my talents to IUP.
Alex Khvatov: What are your strengths?
Quinton Maxwell: I would say that some of my strengths include the ability to stand in the pocket and deliver the ball even when under pressure. I would also say that I am very durable physically and mentally. And I take great pride in trying to outwork my opponents and out prepare my opponents.
Alex Khvatov: What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?
Quinton Maxwell: Areas that I need to and want to improve include my speed, quieting my feet in the pocket, checking the ball down at the right time more consistently, and continuing to become more of a student of the game.
Alex Khvatov: Tell us about your overall career.
Quinton Maxwell: I started in eight games as a redshirt freshman at Ohio University, helping lead Ohio University to a MAC East Championship and a birth in the 2016 MAC Championship game. Then the next two years did not turn out as I had envisioned them. I was replaced as the starter in week two of the 2017 season and played sparingly after that during my time at Ohio University. Upon my transfer notification in January of 2019, I transferred to IUP where I was named the starting quarterback nearly halfway through fall camp. We had a 10-2 record at IUP in my final season of eligibility, setting school records as an offense and some conference records as well.
Alex Khvatov: What is the highlight of your career up to this point?
Quinton Maxwell: The two major highlights of my career include coming into the season opener in 2018 in relief of the starter and sparking a comeback against the University of Howard Bison. We trailed 16-3 when I was placed into the game and we came back to win the game by a final score of 38-32. That day, I went 17/25 for 233 yards passing with two touchdowns as well as two rushing touchdowns. The second highlight was my decision to transfer to IUP along with the entire season and the people that I met along the way here. IUP will always be special to me and I will forever be a Crimson Hawk.
Alex Khvatov: What is your biggest accomplishment in college that you are most proud of?
Quinton Maxwell: I am most proud of being named an honorable mention All-American in my one season at IUP. Garnering the respect of not only my own teammates and coaches, but other coaches and voters around the country was something that was very special to me.
Alex Khvatov: What is the most important trait for a QB?
Quinton Maxwell: The most important quality that I believe a quarterback can possess is the ability to move on to the next play. No matter if it is good or bad, quarterbacks must have the ability to move on from a particular play and play the next play. Bad plays are going happen in this game, missed throws, and even interceptions. The ability for a quarterback to snap and clear and play the next play is a great quality to have. Also, on the flip side of that, quarterbacks have to be able to maintain their edge after good plays and not get complacent when something good happens during the course of the game, but rather build on it.
Alex Khvatov: What is your favorite NFL team?
Quinton Maxwell: Growing up near Kansas City my whole life, I have been a Chiefs fan since day one.
Alex Khvatov: Who is your favorite NFL player?
Quinton Maxwell: Patrick Mahomes II.
Alex Khvatov: Before the ball is snapped, what are the tendencies that you are looking for from the defense?
Quinton Maxwell: I am looking at the box first to get a count of our numbers as an offense vs the numbers that the defense gave in the box. I’m also looking at the front because of certain run checks we have vs. certain fronts. Secondly, I look at the depth, alignment, and eyes of the safeties. The safeties will tend to show you any rotation which can tip off a potential blitz. Depth and alignment and eyes also clue you into what possible coverages can be played. Lastly, I look at the depth, alignment, and eyes of the corners for the same reasons listed before.
Alex Khvatov: What players on your team should we keep an eye on for next season?
Quinton Maxwell: Duane Brown: WR, Justice Evans: RB and Joshua Dauberman: OG.
Alex Khvatov: Who was the best player that you have faced on an opposing team?
Quinton Maxwell: Lamont McPhatter (Cal of PA) and Khalil McKenzie (University of Buffalo).
Alex Khvatov: What do you enjoy most about football?
Quinton Maxwell: I enjoy the brotherhood and the bond you create with your teammates. I also genuinely enjoy the atmosphere of gameday with the fans along with your teammates and coaches.
Alex Khvatov: What are your hobbies?
Quinton Maxwell: My hobbies include golf, Boy Scouts of America and camping. I also truly enjoy working back at home on my family’s farm in Missouri.
Alex Khvatov: What do you want to do with your life after your football career is over?
Quinton Maxwell: I would like to finish my master’s degree in business and seek a job either at a management position or working within a company’s data analytics sector. Another potential dream of mine would be to maybe one day get into marketing for a professional sports franchise.
Alex Khvatov: What five words best describe you?
Quinton Maxwell: Family, faith, hardworking, humility and driven.
