2020 NFL Draft

Winners and Losers

WINNERS

Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens had an exceptional draft.  They were able to fill their needs and still walk away with the best available players on the board.  First round pick ILB Patrick Queen out of LSU has good instincts and coverage skills.  Second rounder Ohio State RB J.K. Dobbins was the best all-around back in the draft.  He will remind everyone of Mark Ingram.  Third round pick DL Justin Madubuike out of Texas A&M is an athletic player with quickness who is a terrific run defender.  Ohio State LB Malik Harrison is a great fit as a 3-4 ILB and was a steal in the third round.  SMU WR James Proche is excellent value as a slot receiver in the sixth round.  He displays exceptional hands.  S Geno Stone out of Iowa is another steal in the seventh round.  He is incredibly instinctive and has good ball skills.

Cleveland Browns

They hit a homerun with the first two picks.  10th overall pick Alabama OT Jedrick Wills Jr. will slide over to the left side and will become a blindside protector for Baker Mayfield.  He is an all-around OT.  He is an aggressive run blocker and is technically sound as a pass protector.  LSU S Grant Delpit was a fantastic pick in the second round.  He slid because he had too many missed tackles on film.  However, he is an instinctive safety with the size, speed, athleticism, great range and outstanding ball skills.  He will be an instant playmaker in the secondary.  Fourth round pick from FAU TE Harrison Bryant will pair up with the newly signed Austin Hooper in the two tight-end sets.  He shows good quickness with soft handsand runs good routes.

Tampa Bay Bucs

First round pick Iowa Tristan Wirfs will slide over to RT and should bring stability to the Bucs O-line unit.  He has quick feet and is incredibly athletic.  He sustains his blocks very well.  Minnesota S Antoine Winfield Jr. was a terrific selection in the second round.  He is a reliable tackler in the open field.  He is an instinctive safety who has outstanding ball skills and range.  The Bucs needed to find help for their backfield.  They selected RB Ke’Shawn Vaughn from Vanderbilt in the third round.  He shows good balance and power.  He gets a lot of yards after contact.  He is also a very good receiver coming out of the backfield and is more than capable in pass protection.  Fifth rounder slot WR Tyler Johnson from Minnesota is a good value pick.  He is quick and runs precise routes.

LOSERS

Green Bay Packers

We had 37 WR’s selected during the 2020 NFL Draft.  However, the Packers decided to pass on their number one need in the draft.  Their championship window is closing, yet they didn’t give their franchise QB Aaron Rodgers any more weapons in the passing game.  But they drafted his replacement.  The Packers traded up in the first round and drafted Utah State QB Jordan Love with the 26th overall pick.  He has all of the physical tools that NFL teams drool over, but his field vision and decision-making are below average.  Second rounder AJ Dillon from Boston College is a big, powerful and explosive downhill runner.  However, he has a lot of tread on his tires and is not a threat as a pass catcher out of the backfield.  I saw him more as a fourth-round pick.  Cincinnati TE Josiah Deguara was a major reach in the third round.  OL Jon Runyan from Michigan was the only solid selection on day three.

Seattle Seahawks

I have gotten used to the Seahawks being a bit unorthodox with their selections in the NFL Draft.  It happens every year.  Their value board is very different even from the other teams in the NFL.  LB Jordyn Brooks from Texas Tech was a major reach in the first round.  This would have been a great value pick in the third round.  I liked edge rusher Darrell Taylor out of Tennessee, but even I can recognize that he was a reach in the second round.  OG Damien Lewis from LSU was a good find in the third round.  He is a good run blocker.  Day three selections didn’t stick out to me at all.
