QB Kory Curtis (Bryant University) Interview

Kory Curtis
Quarterback / Bryant University

Alex Khvatov:  What are your measurements (height, weight and forty time)?

Kory Curtis:  I am 6’4, 240 and 4.83.

Alex Khvatov:  How are you currently preparing for the 2020 season with no offseason training?

Kory Curtis:  At home in Florida, I work out with about 10 or 15 guys.  I work out with weights and I have a hill that I run in front of the house.  I have been throwing to a TE who is from my hometown.  He is going to be coming to Bryant.

Alex Khvatov:  What can we expect from Bryant University this upcoming season?

Kory Curtis:  We will do better than last year.  We had lots of freshmen and sophomores.  Our offense will be more organized.  We have a new and talented defensive coordinator coming in.

Alex Khvatov:  Besides football, what other sports did you play in high school?

Kory Curtis:  I played basketball and baseball.

Alex Khvatov:  When did you start playing QB?

Kory Curtis:  I played flag football and then Pop Warner.  I started at QB for the flag football team.  My dad was a high school coach.  I was a coach’s kid growing up.  I became the starting varsity QB towards the end of my freshman year.  I was fortunate enough to beat out the senior starter.  I was the starter ever since.

Alex Khvatov:  Coming out of high school, what programs showed interest in you?

Kory Curtis:  I was born in Wyoming.  Then my family moved to Florida.  A lot of teams were interested in me during my sophomore and junior year.  Towards the end of my junior year, I broke my hand and didn’t put up the big numbers.  I did well my senior year.  I had Ohio State, Miami and North Carolina looking at me.  I had offers from Hampton, FIU and Florida Tech.  I decided that I wanted to go to a big school.  I figured that I would be able to move myself up the latter.

Alex Khvatov:  Why did you choose Ohio State?

Kory Curtis:  I felt like it was the right fit for me.  Coaches were interested in me.  It felt like home.  I came in as a walk-on.

Alex Khvatov:  Tell us about your time with the Buckeyes.  What was it like to be in the same QB room as Dwayne Haskins and Joe Burrow?

Kory Curtis:  I learned from those guys how to become a leader.  J.T. Barrett led by example.  Joe (Burrow) was more vocal and Dwayne (Haskins) also led by example.  Coach Day taught me about how to run an offense and about different defenses.  It was a good experience, and I got the reps.

Alex Khvatov:  Why did you transfer to Bryant?

Kory Curtis:  My dad knew coach Merritt.  He is a down to earth guy.  I liked the offense he ran.  Twenty other schools offered me.  I was looking at North Carolina Central and Hampton again.  I prayed about it.  I felt like it was a good fit for me.

Alex Khvatov:  Tell us about your junior season.

Kory Curtis:  As a team, we started off slow.  We had a new coach and a new system.  Coach went with another QB to start the season.  I stepped in during the fourth game of the season.  We started winning some games.  We were in every game in the fourth quarter.  We had the lead and let those games slip away.  We need to learn how to finish games off.  Develop that killer instinct.  We went 4-8 this season, but it could have easily been 8-4.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your strengths?

Kory Curtis:  I am a leader who is honest.  I am willing to do whatever it takes to win.  I have a strong arm.  I know how to read coverages.  I am athletic enough to escape the pocket.

Alex Khvatov:  What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?

Kory Curtis:  I need to get faster and more elusive.  I need to work on blitz pickups more.  I need to learn and trust where my feet are.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the highlight of your career up to this point?

Kory Curtis:  My first start against Brown.  It was the coolest thing.  I threw for over 400 yards.  It was cool to see all of the hard work come together.  As a team, we played well in all three phases against Merrimack and LIU.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your favorite NFL team?

Kory Curtis:  My favorite team is the Chargers.  I have always been a big fan of LaDainian Tomlinson.  I loved watching him at TCU.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is your favorite NFL player?

Kory Curtis:  Patrick Mahomes is my favorite QB to watch.

Alex Khvatov:  Which QB do you try to model your game after?

Kory Curtis:  Peyton Manning or Big Ben.  Manning was very intellectual.  Big Ben is physical.  We play similar.  He has a strong arm.

Alex Khvatov:  What players on your team should we keep an eye on for this upcoming season?

Kory Curtis:  WR Anthony Frederick and LT Mike Andrejco who can play all five spots on the O-line.  OG/C Mark O’Brien.  WR Alex Rasmussen is coming off an ACL injury.  On defense, SS/OLB David Onyemem and CB Andre Brackett.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is the best player that you have faced on an opposing team?

Kory Curtis:  Cam Gill from Wagner and #7 CB from Saint Francis (Dorian Jackson).

Alex Khvatov:  What is your definition of a leader?
