CB Devin Washington (Angelo State) Interview - NFL Draft Blitz

CB Devin Washington (Angelo State) Interview

Devin Washington

Cornerback / Angelo State

Alex Khvatov:  What are your measurements (height, weight and forty time)?

Devin Washington:  My height is 6’1, 185 right now and I ran a 4.49 with my trainer just recently.

Alex Khvatov:  How are you currently preparing for the 2020 season with no offseason training?

Devin Washington:  I work out three times a week with my trainer.  My uncle also has a little weight room in his garage.  I work out there five times a week.

Alex Khvatov:  Besides football, what other sports did you play in high school?

Devin Washington:  I played basketball all four years.  I was more into basketball as a kid.  Football became my first love in high school.

Alex Khvatov:  What positions did you play in high school?

Devin Washington:  I played everything.  Backup QB, CB, receiver, safety, and punt returner.

Alex Khvatov:  Coming out of high school, what programs showed interest in you?

Devin Washington:  Originally, I went to Jacksonville University.  I played in one game and then I got injured.  I suffered an ACL injury.  I spent two years there.  Then I went to Valdosta State.  I followed my coach there.  It didn’t work out.

Alex Khvatov:  How did you wind up at JUCO?

Devin Washington:  I went to JUCO in San Diego for a semester.  It worked out for me.

Alex Khvatov:  Why did you transfer to Angelo State?

Devin Washington:  I had a few D-II offers.  I wasn’t eligible to go to D-I.  My eligibility was up.  Immediately, coach Gersch contacted me.  He was telling me that their starting corners just left.  They need a guy like me.  I had the athletic ability and the skill level that they were looking for.

Alex Khvatov:  Tell us about your junior season.

Devin Washington:  I transferred in January.  I went through spring practice.  I was at the bottom of the depth chart.  I had most INT’s during the spring.  I had eight or nine picks.  By spring game, I was starting.  During fall camp, I learned the defense and the playbook.  I felt okay with the season.  There were lots of plays that I could have done better.  My coach tells me that I haven’t done anything yet.   I have a lot of work to do.  We had an 8-3 season, and I had seven picks.  I also dropped like seven picks.

Alex Khvatov:  What can we expect from Angelo State this upcoming season?

Devin Washington:  I feel like we can make it all the way.  Our defense played at an elite level last year.  We have our whole defense and offense coming back.  We need to get the QB.  We should be better and make the playoffs.  Take it one game at a time, but the goal is the national championship.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your strengths?

Devin Washington:  My playmaking ability.  I find the ball.  My ball skills and instincts.

Alex Khvatov:  What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?

Devin Washington:  My technique.  You have to have discipline.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the highlight of your career up to this point?

Devin Washington:  I stripped the ball on a slant route and took it in for a TD against UTPB.  I also got an INT in the same game last season.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the biggest lesson that you have taken away from your coaching staff?

Devin Washington:  Locking in and being dominant on every play.  My coach always tells me that no one should catch a pass on you.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your favorite NFL team?

Devin Washington:  The Falcons.  They let me down ever since the Patriots beat them in the Super Bowl.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is your favorite NFL player?

Devin Washington:  Tyrann Mathieu.  We have the same mindset.

Alex Khvatov:  What players on your team should we keep an eye on for this upcoming season?

Devin Washington:  We have a good receiver in Keke Chism.  On defense, LB Hunter Kyle is really solid.  He is an animal.  OL transfer from Washington State, Christian Haangana will be a guy to watch.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is the best player that you have faced on an opposing team?

Devin Washington:  Last season, Tarleton State WR Zimari Manning.  He only had one catch against me, but he was pretty quick.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the most important trait for a CB?

Devin Washington:  Discipline.  You have to be locked in on every play and ready to go.  See the alignment pre-snap and what routes might be coming in.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you enjoy most about football?

Devin Washington:  The guys are like my family.  I still talk to the guys from my old school.  I also love making plays.  I get goosebumps thinking about it.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your hobbies?

Devin Washington:  I do a lot of fishing.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you want to do with your life after your football career is over?

Devin Washington:  After football, I want to work with kids.  Talking to the kids who are less fortunate.  I want to be a mentor for them.

Alex Khvatov:  What makes you unique?

Devin Washington:  I do a lot for people behind the scenes.  I help kids and people off the field.

Alex Khvatov:  What five words best describe you?

Devin Washington:  Loyal, hardworking, confident, perseverance, and playmaker.
