DE Bryce Carter (Towson) Interview

Bryce Carter
Defensive End / Towson

Alex Khvatov:  What are your measurements (height, weight and forty time)?

Bryce Carter:  I am 6’1, 260 and 4.6 or 4.7.

Alex Khvatov:  How did you prepare for the 2020 season with no offseason training?

Bryce Carter:  For our program, our new coach has an app for our new lifts.  He adjusted the workouts.  I ran on the grass fields and up the hills.

Alex Khvatov:  Besides football, what other sports did you play in high school?

Bryce Carter:  I played basketball.  We only had three sports at my high school – baseball, basketball and football.  I went to a small high school in Pennsylvania.

Alex Khvatov:  What positions did you play in high school?

Bryce Carter:  I played DT, DE, FB, and OL.

Alex Khvatov:  Coming out of high school, what programs showed interest in you?

Bryce Carter:  During my junior year, Delaware State was my first offer.  I had 12 offers my senior year.  I had Monmouth, Duquesne, and Towson.  Towson emailed me late in December, and they asked me why I was being under recruited.  I told them it was because of my height and being from a small high school.  I worked out for them.

Alex Khvatov:  How did you wind up at Towson?

Bryce Carter:  My mom and my family had a good feeling about the place.  The players and the coaches were great.  I can see myself thriving as a person and as a student here.

Alex Khvatov:  Tell us about your overall career.

Bryce Carter:  I redshirted my first year.  In 2017, it was my first year playing.  I was in the mix.  I had about 40 tackles and four sacks.  We went 5-7 that year.  Tom Flacco came in, and we made it to the playoffs in 2018.  It was the first time we made the playoffs since 2013.  I was named All-American that year.  We had lots of injuries last year.  We went 7-5 and missed the playoffs.  We lost the last game.  During my junior year, I was a captain on the team.  We changed defensive coordinators this last year.  During my sophomore year, I was asked to get up field more.  This past season, I was making reads.  It was a 3-4 scheme.  I was the edge guy and a run defender first and foremost.  We are going to play multiple defenses this year and switch it up a bit.

Alex Khvatov:  What can we expect from your team this upcoming season?

Bryce Carter:  First of all, we will take it one game at a time and prepare the right way.  We have lots of experienced guys and seniors.  Getting back to the playoffs and a possible conference championship.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your strengths?

Bryce Carter:  My technique is very good.  Aggressiveness and explosiveness.

Alex Khvatov:  What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?

Bryce Carter:  One thing is my diet.  I changed my diet a lot.  I was spending time eating bad food.  My durability wasn’t where I wanted it to be.  I am drinking more water and not eating late.  I need to take care of my knees.  I had tendinitis last year.  It actually developed in 2018, but I am back to normal now.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the highlight of your career up to this point?

Bryce Carter:  During my redshirt freshman year, we were 2-6 at the time.  We played against our rival Delaware.  We were down by a TD.  I got the sack on third down, and the offense scored on the next drive.  We won the game.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the biggest lesson that you have taken away from your coaching staff?

Bryce Carter:  Control what you can control.  Treat the game how it should be treated.  Don’t panic when things don’t go your way.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your favorite NFL team?

Bryce Carter:  I grew up as an Atlanta Falcons fan.  I was a big Michael Vick fan.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is your favorite NFL player?

Bryce Carter:  WR Julio Jones.

Alex Khvatov:  What players on your team should we keep an eye on for this upcoming season?

Bryce Carter:  Shane Simpson.  He tore his ACL.  He was an All-American RB.  He is a key player for us.  LB Ricky DeBerry was a transfer from Oklahoma.  DL Ron Johnson was a transfer from Michigan, DL.  WR Caleb Smith is an explosive and athletic WR.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is the best player that you have faced on an opposing team?

Bryce Carter:  We played against D.J. Moore from Maryland.  OT from Elon, Oli Udoh was the best player.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the most important trait for a DL?

Bryce Carter:  Technique is at the top.  If you play with great technique, you will make plays.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you enjoy most about football?
