Trey Carter
Offensive Lineman / Coastal Carolina
Alex Khvatov: What are your measurements (height, weight and forty time)?
Trey Carter: I am 6’2, 300 pounds.
Alex Khvatov: How did you prepare for the 2020 season with no offseason training?
Trey Carter: When they shut us down during the spring break, I stayed here. I didn’t go back home. Our coach gave us a squat rack. We lifted at my friend’s house. It was in his living room.
Alex Khvatov: Besides football, what other sports did you play in high school?
Trey Carter: I played basketball and tennis. My mom was a D-I tennis player. I played a lot of tennis growing up. I played it during my senior year of high school.
Alex Khvatov: What positions did you play in high school?
Trey Carter: I played LG and NG at a small high school. We had 31 people in my graduation class. I was born in Columbus, Mississippi, but I moved to Alabama when I was six months old.
Alex Khvatov: Coming out of high school, what programs showed interest in you?
Trey Carter: I went to a small high school. I wasn’t heavily recruited. They had a problem with my height. I had a lot of people tell me that if I was a couple of inches taller, I would be playing at a bigger school.
Alex Khvatov: How did you wind up at Coastal Carolina?
Trey Carter: I was really excited. Coastal Carolina and Georgia State offered me. But Georgia State didn’t heavily recruit me. Coastal was heavily recruiting me. Charleston Southern was also showing me a lot of love.
Alex Khvatov: How would you describe your overall career?
Trey Carter: I started my redshirt freshman yea. I made all-conference at OG. I was a center my sophomore year. Junior year, I started two games at center and 10 games at RG. I was an all-conference player the last two years as well. I started 36 games over my career.
Alex Khvatov: What can we expect from your team this upcoming season?
Trey Carter: We lost five games by a total of 24 points last year. Our guys are confident. We have a lot of talent. Our defense will be dominant. We have two edge rushers, Tarron and Jeffrey. Our front seven should be the best in the Sun Belt. We expect to win a lot of games.
Alex Khvatov: What are your strengths?
Trey Carter: I finish blocks better than anyone in the Sun Belt. I put people to the ground. I am a good run blocker.
Alex Khvatov: What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?
Trey Carter: My hands. At times, I have a hard time keeping them inside. It is hard to control the opponent that way. I got better with it this offseason.
Alex Khvatov: What is the highlight of your career up to this point?
Trey Carter: Last year when we beat Kansas and Troy. We beat Troy in the final seconds on a two-point conversion last year. They came to our home. It was good beating a team from my home state who never offered me.
Alex Khvatov: What is the biggest lesson that you have taken away from your coaching staff?
Trey Carter: We have a saying here, strike a stone. Keep working, no matter what and take advantage of the opportunities.
Alex Khvatov: Who is your favorite NFL player?
Trey Carter: I like Taylor Lewan from the Titans. He brings nastiness to the position.
Alex Khvatov: What players on your team should we keep an eye on for this upcoming season?
Trey Carter: RB CJ Marable is a great player. Isaiah Likely is the best TE in the conference. He is a freak and a beast. He might be the best TE in the entire nation. Tarron Jackson will get drafted. He made the top 250 preseason list for the Senior Bowl. DT C.J. Brewer, DE Jeffrey Gunter, LB Teddy Gallagher, Silas Kelly and WR Jaivon Heiligh are all great players.
Alex Khvatov: Who is the best player that you have faced on an opposing team?
Trey Carter: Javon Kinlaw is one of them. As a redshirt freshman, Western Illinois DT (Khalen Saunders) was drafted by the Chiefs. He was doing backflips at the Senior Bowl. He was a good player.
Alex Khvatov: What is the most important trait for an OL?
Trey Carter: You have to have an attitude and a mean streak. You also have to play through injuries. You have to mentally block it out. I had a torn ligament and a chipped bone that I played through last year.
Alex Khvatov: What is it like having that responsibility to make line calls as a C?
Trey Carter: I love it. I like that responsibility. I know the playbook. It is like being a surgeon out there. I have been at OG this whole camp, but I can play any interior position on the line.
Alex Khvatov: What do you enjoy most about football?
Trey Carter: Definitely the teammates and the bonds. You are going to war with these guys. I love competing with my brothers. It is a team game. My goal is for RB CJ Marable to have 1,200 rushing yards this season. It is the type of mindset I have. I always want my teammates to succeed.
Alex Khvatov: What are your hobbies?
Trey Carter: I am a deer hunter. I grew up in the rural South. I like to ride dirt roads. I picked up golf recently. I also like to read.
Alex Khvatov: What makes you unique?
Trey Carter: I am a country boy from Alabama. I am a little crazy. I talk a lot and I get under people’s skin. I have an edge. I bring other people along with me. I am a high energy guy.
Alex Khvatov: Do you take a lot of pride in being named team captain?
Trey Carter: It is my second year being captain. It is a huge deal. It means that my peers respect me. It is the biggest honor of my life.
Alex Khvatov: What do you want to do with your life after your football career is over?
Trey Carter: I plan on being a football coach either in high school or college. Life takes you in different directions. I received my bachelor’s in three years. I graduated last summer in exercise and sports science. I am getting a second bachelor’s degree in recreation and sports management.
Alex Khvatov: What five words best describe you?
Trey Carter: Disciplined, tough, energetic, smart, and passionate.
