Here are a few player reports from week two of CFB season.
Shaun Jolly, CB, Appalachian State
Jolly is probably the Mountaineers’ best corner. He does a lot of the little things right as a corner. I like that he is a good communicator and is an emotional leader of the defense. I like that his is a good tackler in the run game and will also tackle the catch in coverage. He plays on the outside for the Mountaineers and plays a lot more zone coverage than man coverage. The junior is 5’9 and will probably project more as a slot corner in the NFL. I think he will probably be either a day three pick or an undrafted free agent signing.
Ian Book, QB, Notre Dame
There is a lot to like about Ian Book’s game. His Notre Dame career has been stellar and that is due to his strong pocket awareness and I like arm. Book has good accuracy that should translate to the NFL. I really like his technique especially the strong base that he shows on his lower half. If there is one thing that Book needs to improve as the year goes on, it is his internal clock. I would rate Book as a day two pick.
Liam Eichenberg, OT, Notre Dame
Eichenberg is a good pass blocker who just needs to get smoother on his kick slide. It might benefit him to move over to the right side in the NFL. I like his awareness when pass blocking. That will help him take on NFL blitzes. I also like that he has a good base when pass blocking. As a run blocker, he is more of a zone scheme blocker. I think he needs to clean up his diving in the run game. Overall, I would rate him as an early day two draft pick.
Jackson Carman, OT, Clemson
Carman has long arms which really help him as a pass blocker. He has a decent punch and a tendency to knock edge rushers up the arc. As a run blocker, he is capable of being both a zone and power scheme run blocker. I would like to see him get more consistent at using his body when run blocking. I think he is overall a good run blocker who had success against the Wake Forest defensive line.
