2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: EDGE Tyree Wilson, Texas Tech

A transfer from Texas A&M, Tyree Wilson really stepped up as a pass rusher in 2021, generating 37 pressures and collecting 6 sacks. He totaled 50 pressures in three less games in 2022, getting 8 sacks and 10 hits on the QB. He has freakish length and solid athletic ability, which makes him a very intriguing prospect on the edge somewhere.  As a fan, if you think that Wilson is a finished product and a guy who can contribute immediately, I think you are wrong.

The real upside with Wilson is in his hand work. He has the length to be vicious if he can learn to use his hands better. If he can learn how to use his hands effectively, he’s going to be a freak on the defensive line at the next level.

Struggled through the end of the year on a foot injury that shut him down the last two games. Did not work out at the Combine due to his foot injury.

Tyree Wilson’s scouting report

Athletic Ability (45)

Speed/Athleticism: 20

  • Speed (5/7) – Very quick. Good athlete overall, should test fairly well in all categories. Top end speed is not great, struggles to keep up with average athletes.
  • Lateral Quickness (5/7) – Lateral quickness is better than average. Does struggle to change direction, especially laterally.
  • Body Control (4/6) – Body control is good, not great.

Burst: 10

  • First Step Quickness (4.5/5) – Very sudden first step, dangerous when he can time it with the snap well.
  • Explosion (4/5) – Very explosive athlete. Flashes solid explosion at most times.

Power/Strength: 15

  • Upper Body Strength (4/6) – Really needs to disengage with blocks better and faster. Likes to hold them in place. Doesn’t handle contact well, gets bodied in double teams.
  • Lower Body Strength (5/6) – Has some serious leg drive to generate a powerful bull rush. Really can generate a very strong bull rush.
  • Pure Brute Strength (2/3) – Not so much a pure “brute,” struggles to generate power at times.

Pass Rushing Mechanics (25)

Bend: 10

  • Balance (3.5/5) – Balance looks good. Can change direction relatively quickly.
  • Bend (2.5/5) – Stiff athlete, don’t really see any bend from him.

Finesse: 15

  • Hand Usage (3/5) – Has no idea how to use his hands. Gets plugged routinely at the line of scrimmage. Struggles to get off of tight ends, wants to resort to power.
  • Hand Strength (3/5) – Has freakishly long arms and can learn to become powerful with his hands.
  • Hand Placement (2.5/5) – Doesn’t typically place his hands very well.

Defender Ability (26)

Tackling/Pursuit: 16

  • Tackling Ability (4.5/6) – Decent wrap up tackler. Tends to go a little too high for my liking and relies on his athleticism and length to corral ball carriers and drag/sling them down.
  • Space Defending (3/5) – Not particularly good in space. Struggles to close effectively.
  • Pursuit Angles (3.5/5) – Pursuit angles aren’t great. Looks like he wants to tag up.

Motor/Consistency: 10

  • Motor (4/5) – Motor is good, not great. I’d like to see him work to the boundary better.
  • Consistent Motor (3/5) – Consistently giving up as soon as the ball is thrown. Won’t find him chasing big plays down the field or to the perimeter very often.

Overall: (78) – 2nd/3rd Round
