Charlie Callinan Interview - NFL Draft Blitz

Charlie Callinan Interview

Charlie Callinan

Tight End/H-Back – Senior

Boston College

Alex Khvatov:  What are your measurements (height, weight and forty time)?

Charlie Callinan:  I am 6’4, 240 pounds and I ran a 4.75.

Alex Khvatov:  Where are you currently training for the NFL Draft?

Charlie Callinan:  Before the pro day, I was training at Parabolic in New Jersey.  Now I am in Massachusetts at Exceed Sports with Sean Smith.

Alex Khvatov:  How would you describe your Pro Day performance?

Charlie Callinan:  I did well overall.  My agility drills were good.  I did great on the vert and the broad.  I had 34.5 inches on the vert and 9’11 in the broad.  I wasn’t too happy with my forty.  I did well in the positional drills.  I worked out as a slot WR and as a TE.  I ran crisp routes.

Alex Khvatov:  Coming out of high school, what programs showed interest in you?

Charlie Callinan:  It came down to Boston College and Rutgers.  I went to high school in New Jersey.  I knew the culture around Rutgers.  I was high on Rutgers initially.  They had great coaches.  Coach Schiano offered me a scholarship during my sophomore year.

Alex Khvatov:  Why did you choose Boston College?

Charlie Callinan:  I went to Boston and fell in love with the campus.  I had friends on the team.  I felt more comfortable there.  Boston College is a great academic school.  Head coach Steve Addazio was doing promising things.

Alex Khvatov:  Tell us about your overall career.

Charlie Callinan:  I redshirted my freshman year.  I started all four years.  I started 46 or 47 games.  We were a run dominant offense.  I learned how to block really well.  We won a lot of games.  I played three bowl games.  We had four bowl games altogether.  I played against great competition.  It was a great overall experience.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your strengths?

Charlie Callinan:  I am a smart player.  I am able to slow the game down.  I am able to diagnose.  It helped me get on the field early.  I have a size advantage over a lot of people.  I am bigger than most corners and safeties in college.  I have good hands.  I bring great leadership on and off the field.

Alex Khvatov:  What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?

Charlie Callinan:  I was a receiver in college.  But I have been working out as a TE during my training.  I have been working a lot on inline blocking and running routes out of the three-point stance.  I need to be more of a hybrid kind of a guy.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the highlight of your career up to this point?

Charlie Callinan:  When we took down USC my redshirt freshman year.  They were #6 in the nation at the time.  I have been to four bowl games, but we won only once.  Winning the bowl game in 2016 against Maryland.  It came down to the wire.  Our offense moved the ball that game.  The senior season was a highlight.  I got hurt in the middle of my senior year.  I was a captain.  We went on a run towards the end of the year.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your favorite NFL team?

Charlie Callinan:  I grew up in New Jersey, but I was born in Cleveland, Ohio.  I am a Browns fan.  They made a lot of good moves so far.  They are about to turn it around.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is your favorite NFL player?

Charlie Callinan:  I like to model my game after Travis Kelce.  He is a mismatch.  He makes plays.  I love watching him.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the most important trait for a WR?

Charlie Callinan:  I would say the ability to understand concepts and where you fit into that concept.  You can be a burner, but you need to know where and when you need to be in that spot.  You need to know everybody’s route concepts and how they fit in.  You need to know the ins and outs of a football play.

Alex Khvatov:  What players on your team should we keep an eye on for next season?

Charlie Callinan:  DE Zach Allen is a hell of a player.  True freshman RB AJ Dillon had a great season.  Safety Lukas Denis was tied for most picks in the NCAA last year.  He was an All-American.  He is a great player.  LB Connor Strachan didn’t play this year.  He is coming back from injury.  We have an unbelievable team.

Alex Khvatov:  What can we expect from Boston College next season?

Charlie Callinan:  They will have a high-powered offense.  They will have Anthony Brown back at QB.  He went down with an injury at the end of the season.  AJ Dillon is a bruising back.  All of our OL are coming back.  They have a lot of guys at receiver who were behind us.  They are more than capable.  The defense is very stout.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is the best player that you have faced during your career?

Charlie Callinan:  Jalen Ramsey was big, strong, fast and smart.  He thought like an offensive player.  He would be in the right place to make the play.  He is also so physically gifted.

Alex Khvatov:  How would you characterize your former teammate DE Harold Landry?

Charlie Callinan:  He is a hard worker.  The guy will be running hills at seven o’clock in the morning and then will go to the weight room two hours later.  He is a workhorse and an animal on the field.  He will be really successful.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you enjoy most about football?

Charlie Callinan:  I love to compete.  I want to win my matchup.  It is a very violent game.  The game of football brings out your true colors.  You have to be competitive or you will fail.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your hobbies?

Charlie Callinan:  I love to play golf.  I am getting better at it.  I play the guitar, workout, watch sports and hangout with friends.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you want to do with your life after your football career is over?

Charlie Callinan:  I was a double major in science and marketing.  I finished my undergrad work.  I have been working on my Master’s degree in business administration.  I am not done yet.  I have one semester left.  I have absolutely no idea what I am going to do.  Right now, my focus has been on getting to the NFL.

Alex Khvatov:  Finish the sentence, Charlie Callinan is….

Charlie Callinan:  I will never let someone outwork me.  I will be a leader.  You would want a player like me on your team.  I am a guy you would go to war with.
