Vyncint Smith Interview - NFL Draft Blitz

Vyncint Smith Interview

Vyncint Smith

Wide Receiver – Senior

Limestone College

Alex Khvatov:  What are your measurements (height, weight and forty time)?

Vyncint Smith:  My height is 6’2.  I was 201 at the Regional Combine and I ran a 4.36 at the pro day.

Alex Khvatov:  Tell us about your performance at the Regional Combine in Tampa, FL.

Vyncint Smith:  It was a cool experience.  I was invited to the Regional Combine invitational.  They invited the top 100 players that were snubbed by the National Combine.  40 guys accepted the invitation.  It was mostly offensive players.  I went through the positional drills.  I did pretty good in the drills.  I had a good showing.  They had teams there just like the big Combine.  I was able to talk to the GM of the Vikings (Rick Spielman).  It was a good event.  It was a way to get my name out there in front of more eyes.

Alex Khvatov:  Where are you currently training for the NFL Draft?

Vyncint Smith:  Before the pro day, I was training at Velocity with Jed Hartigan in Charlotte, NC.  Now I am training with the WR’s coach from home and a QB from my private workouts.

Alex Khvatov:  Do you have any scheduled private workouts?

Vyncint Smith:  I had a private workout with the Dallas Cowboys on March 28th.  I have a private workout on Monday, April 2nd with the Falcons.  I have a visit with the Jets on April 9th

Alex Khvatov:  Were you satisfied with your private workout with the Cowboys?

Vyncint Smith:  It went really well.  I reviewed plays and formations with Coach Judd Garrett.  We talked about my film and critiqued it.  Then I ran a number of routes inside and outside.  They wanted to see how I get in and out of my routes and how I catch the ball.  Overall, the workout was about for an hour and a half.  It was a learning experience.  I had a good workout with the Cowboys.

Alex Khvatov:  How would you describe your Pro Day performance?

Vyncint Smith:  After the fact, it was exhilarating.  Before the pro day, I was a little nervous and excited.  I knew what I could do.  I was planning to put it down officially.  I am glad that South Carolina allowed me to their pro day.  I had a 10’10 broad and 39.5 inch vert.  I ran 6.85 in the L-drill and 4.06 in the 20-yard shuttle.

Alex Khvatov:  You are quite an athlete.  What other sports did you play in high school?

Vyncint Smith:  In middle school and high school, I ran track.  I ran 100, 200 and I was on a 4×100 relay team.

Alex Khvatov:  Coming out of high school, what programs showed interest in you?

Vyncint Smith:  Originally, I was getting big looks from South Carolina, UNC Charlotte, App State and Richmond.  Limestone was actually my last look.  My only other offer was from Tusculum.

Alex Khvatov:  Why did you choose Limestone College?

Vyncint Smith:  They were more traditional in the classroom than Tusculum.  At Tusculum, you would have one class for 18 days, and then you would move on to another class.  Limestone was a new program.  They were laying down the foundation.  They were building.  It was close to home.

Alex Khvatov:  Tell us about your overall career.

Vyncint Smith:  As a team, we had five wins my first two years.  The last two years, we had 9 or 10 wins.  We have steadily become better.  This past year was our first season when we were a part of a conference.  We were more than just the new kids on the block.  We fought for a conference championship.  I am the all-time leading receiver in yards at my school.  I am the second all-time leading receiver in TD’s at the school.  I have been a starter ever since the fourth game of my freshman year.  I missed only one game due to injury.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your strengths?

Vyncint Smith:  On the field, I bring a sense of calmness.  The team relied on me to make plays.  I bring speed and get physical.  I am building on becoming even more physical right now.  I make great plays with my hands.  I stretch the field well.  I am a reliable receiver.

Alex Khvatov:  What areas of your game are you trying to improve upon?

Vyncint Smith:  Personally, getting in and out of breaks smoothly.  At times, I can slip coming out of my last step.  I need to keep my body straight before my break.  I also need to catch every ball thrown my way.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the highlight of your career up to this point?

Vyncint Smith:  The game against Newberry this past year.  They are our rivals and they beat us the first three years.  We were down 17-0 in the second quarter.  I ended up with 180 yards and a TD.  It was our homecoming game.  We came back and beat them on the last drive.  We beat them by kicking a game-winning FG at the end of the game.  It was the biggest win for us as a team.

Alex Khvatov:  What is your favorite NFL team?

Vyncint Smith:  I grew up rooting for the Vikings.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is your favorite NFL player?

Vyncint Smith:  DeAndre Hopkins.  He is from the state of South Carolina.  He can make plays.  He is unstoppable.

Alex Khvatov:  What is the most important trait for a WR?

Vyncint Smith:  Two things.  Finding a way to get open and making contested catches.

Alex Khvatov:  What players on your team should we keep an eye on for next season?

Vyncint Smith:  CB Josh Simmons was supposed to come out this year, but he got injured the second game of the season.  He will be playing safety next season.  He played CB before.  He had eight picks during his junior year.  He is a big name.  Check him out.  He is about 5’11 or 6’0 and 200 pounds.  He moves very well.  He uses his length and never underestimates anyone.  He can keep up with anyone.

Alex Khvatov:  Who is the best player that you have faced during your career?

Vyncint Smith:  My teammate CB Josh Simmons.

Alex Khvatov:  Which NFL player would you compare your game to?

Vyncint Smith:  I compare myself to A.J. Green.  We have the same size and body.  We can both take a screen to the house and be vertical threats.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you enjoy most about football?

Vyncint Smith:  Competition.  I want to dominate the man across from me.  I want to win games.

Alex Khvatov:  What are your hobbies?

Vyncint Smith:  I like to work on cars.  It is interesting to me in so many different ways.

Alex Khvatov:  What do you want to do with your life after your football career is over?

Vyncint Smith:  My major was in mechanical engineering.  I want to open up a tuning shop.  I want to work on cars and make them faster.

Alex Khvatov:  Finish the sentence, Vyncint Smith is….

Vyncint Smith:  Optimistic.
