2023 Senior Bowl Watchlist Scouting Notes: RB Chris Smith, Louisiana

Chris Smith is a balanced running back prospect who can run with some nifty power and has adequate speed. Smith worked his way into the rotation from the ground up, becoming the full-time starter in 2021. His combination of run power and speed will make him an intriguing addition to an NFL backfield rotation, but he doesn’t appear nearly as capable in any other role.

Chris Smith scouting notes

Pros:

  • Excellent change of direction, whether making a slight adjustment or a direct cut. Manipulates defenders well with his movement.
  • Excellent body control. Smith has great body control and a bunch of moves to make him difficult to catch.
  • Runs with some power. Was used in power situations. Impressive downhill rumbling ability.
  • Accelerates very well.
  • Offers good explosive ability. Hits the hole with great intensity.
  • Offers good contact balance in power situations and traffic.
  • Capable receiver out of the backfield.

Cons:

  • Solid speed. Doesn’t have the sustained speed you’d like to see during a big run, starts to run out of steam at about 25-30 yards.
  • Ball security might be an issue with Smith trying to run through traffic.
  • Not capable of being lined up across the formation as a receiver.
  • Doesn’t look like he can hold up effectively in pass protection.
