2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: QB Stetson Bennett, Georgia

2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: QB Stetson Bennett, Georgia

Stetson Bennett’s career ascension is wild, to say the least. A walk-on to Georgia, Stetson played a year at a JUCO before returning to Georgia and becoming a two-time National Championship winner. He raised some concerns during the pre-draft process about his decision-making, electing to skip all-star games and getting arrested in Dallas right before the start of the Senior Bowl week. However, the talent on the field is there, and he has the skill set to hang around the league for a while.

Bennett looks like he has plateaued as a prospect, offering very little upside at this point.

Stayed healthy all of his career. Very durable. Has some frame concerns at the next level due to his lack of it.

Stetson Bennett’s scouting report

Quarterback Ability (65)

Arm Talent: 20

  • Arm Strength (6/10) – Arm strength is middling. Can push the ball downfield a bit, but nothing special with his arm strength.
  • Touch Ability (3.5/5) – Throws nice with touch. Delivers beautiful touch bombs.
  • Release (3/5) – Average release. Nothing fancy or special, flashes some different arm slots, but doesn’t have the arm talent to hold all of that up.

Accuracy/Placement: 25

  • Accuracy (10.5/15) – Good accuracy. Struggles with consistency at times but has flashed the ability to get into a zone and just start throwing darts. Ball will sail on him in the intermediate area when he tries to place it in between coverage zones.
  • Placement/Vision (6.5/10) – Placement is a lot of times off, which is why Bennett struggles to throw against man coverage. Throws really well on timing concepts. Will throw the ball blind and force it especially under duress.

Pocket Presence: 10

  • Pocket Positioning (3/5) – Doesn’t always drop well, tends to drift away like Aaron Rodgers used to. Loses the integrity of his drop.
  • Pocket Maneuverability (4/5) – Moves around the pocket very well. Finds space very well.

Footwork: 10

  • Consistency (3/5) – Feet typically stop moving in the pocket. Very annoying aspect of his game. Doesn’t have the size to make up for that nonsense. Throws from a solid base and platform.
  • Quickness (4/5) – Very quick feet.

Athleticism (20)

Mobility: 12

  • Outside of the pocket (5/7) – Gets outside of the pocket well. Shows the ability to throw well on the move, but isn’t consistent. Very capable of moving to the outside of the pocket.
  • Downfield Ability (4.5/5) – Very effective scrambler. Can gash a defense with his legs. He is a capable scrambler and even can be a designed runner if he needs to be in an RPO/read-option look.

Improvability: 8

  • Natural Improvability (2/4) – Flashes some improvability but mostly in small increments and mostly as a scrambler.
  • Play Extension (3/4) – Very good at moving to extend plays rather than create something new.

Intelligence (15)

Football IQ/Field Vision: 10

  • Football Intelligence (2.5/5) – Flashes solid football intelligence but then makes boneheaded decisions, especially when under pressure.
  • Ability to read pre-snap (3.5/5) – Reads pre-snap alignments pretty well.

Overall: (70.5) – 6th/7th Round
