2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: WR Marvin Mims, Oklahoma

2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: WR Marvin Mims, Oklahoma

Already among the top receivers in the country, Marvin Mims has the NFL’s upmost attention. Mims may be the product more of a media campaign that crowned him as one of the top players in the country more than he is an NFL target. He was ridiculously productive at Oklahoma. Mims is a perfect example of a Z prospect and still appears to offer some upside and potential to his game.

Projection: 2nd/3rd Round

I don’t see a tremendous amount of upside from Marvin Mims. He’s an athletic receiver who plays bigger than he actually is, and we have seen that style of receiver dominate at the next level. Mims has big play upside but isn’t going to be a true #1 receiver, in my opinion. I think he settles into a two role very well and is highly productive his entire career.

Marvin Mims’ injury history is clean.

Marvin Mims’ scouting report

Athletic Ability (25)

Speed/Athleticism: 15

  • Speed (5/7) – Good, not great speed. I just don’t see that consistent separation that he needs to create. I don’t see a lot of top end speed from Mims. Just looks a step slow. Tested phenomenally at the NFL Combine, I just don’t see that kind of speed on tape.
  • Change of Direction (3/4) – Flashes at times, but isn’t great. Hips look a little bit tight.
  • Body Control (3.5/4) – Good body control. Makes some pretty crazy catches. Can twist and contort his body in many different directions.

Acceleration/Burst: 10

  • Acceleration (3/5) – Does not accelerate. Struggles to get up to speed effectively.
  • Explosiveness (4.5/5) – Very good explosion. Tested remarkably well.

Receiver Technique (25)

Route Running: 15

  • Footwork (5/7) – Footwork through his routes is pretty tight. Takes a good bit for Mims to really sink his hips down and change direction. Can be nuanced at times. Ran some good double moves.
  • Route Tree (4/5) – Ran a good route tree between the Lincoln Riley offense and what Brett Venables brought to Oklahoma.
  • Nuances (2.5/3) – Shows some good. Nuances through his routes for the most part. Very savvy at just getting open.

Release/Flexibility: 10

  • Release Ability (3.5/5) – Has a decent release. Works through press pretty well.
  • Sideline Work (4.5/5) – Shows the body control and ability to work the sideline well when he has to.

Catch Ability (25)

Catch Ability: 15

  • Natural Catch Ability (9/10) – Good hands, shows some hand strength. Sticky hands that look like he plays with stickum. Ridiculous focus.
  • Consistency (3/5) – Struggles with consistency. Had some awful concentration drops at times throughout his career.

Contested Catch Ability: 10

  • Vertical Ability (3.5/5) – Doesn’t look like he’s a guy who’s going to go up high to make catches but he has the ability to – so it depends on how he is schemed and coached.
  • Catch Through Contact (4.5/5) – Flashes solid ability to catch through contact and traffic. Can make crazy catches through traffic and around defenders where its almost unbelievable.

Schematic Versatility (20)

Deep Threat/RAC: 10

  • Deep Threat Ability (3.5/5) – Offers some deep threat ability. Tracks the ball well downfield. Tracks the ball well.
  • Run After Catch Ability (4/5) – Offers suitable RAC ability. Used in a variety of ways with the Oklahoma offense. Breaks tackles with solid contact balance. Gets very low as a runner in space.

Run Blocking: 10

  • Strength (2.5/5) – Does not show much consistent strength as a run blocker. Not a guy who is going to win a lot of those reps.
  • Consistency (3/5) – Doesn’t have a lot of consistency as a run blocker. Struggles with his technique.

Overall: (79.5) – 2nd Round
