2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: CB Jarrick Bernard-Converse, LSU

2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: CB Jarrick Bernard-Converse, LSU

A transfer from Oklahoma State, Jarrick Bernard-Converse is a very strong cornerback who can support run defense. He might end up being drafted as a fit into a ROVER role. He certainly has that style to his game. JBC tested extremely well at his pro day, posting ridiculous numbers across the board. He can serve a defense in multiple ways and projects forward having a solid NFL career.

Offers some upside as a guy who can learn to press. Didn’t see him to it too much. Has room to continue to get better in all areas of coverage but plays well overall. There’s some upside there but not a lot of it.

Missed most of Spring Training in 2022 with an injury. Missed the last regular season game of 2022 with an injury.

Jarrick Bernard-Converse’s scouting report

Athletic Ability (40)

Speed/Athleticism: 15

  • Speed (6/7) – Excellent speed and quickness. Moves very well – fluid athlete. Good speed and burst.
  • Lateral Quickness (2.5/4) – Decent lateral quickness. Nothing special.
  • Acceleration (3.5/4) – Acceleration is good. Tested phenomenally.

Strength: 15

  • Upper Body Strength (3.5/5) – Has some decent upper body strength. Built more like a safety.
  • Lower Body Strength (4.5/5) – Excellent lower body strength and ability. Tested phenomenally.
  • Brute Power (3/5) – For a cornerback, he’s pretty physical but doesn’t have that “brute” level energy.

Hip Flexibility: 10

  • Change of Direction (4/5) – Has good hips. Fairly fluid, looked great in his pro day workout.
  • Recovery (4/5) – Shows good burst to have solid recoverability. Struggles against faster receivers to get into position, still very strong in this regard.

Defender Ability (15)

Tackling: 10

  • Tackling Ability (4.5/6) – Strong wrap up ability. Good tackler, great considering the position group. Brings the hit power. Consistently looking for contact.
  • Space Defending (3/4) – Very strong defender in space. Good tackler and closes quickly on ball carriers.

Pursuit: 5

  • Pursuit Angles (4/5) – Pursuit angles look pretty good for the most part. Works through traffic pretty well.

Coverage Ability (40)

Man Coverage: 15

  • Coverage Ability (7.5/10) – Has too much of a tendency to grab. When he locates the ball, which he normally does, he is excellent. Solid and physical at the catch point – contests the football and not the receiver. Stays in the hip pocket.
  • Physicality (3/5) – Fairly physical. Prefers to play trail technique and relies on his athleticism.

Zone Coverage: 15

  • Coverage Ability (7.5/10) – Does a good job lining up to be questionable with his man or zone assignment to a quarterback. Tends to drift too far. Has the ability to play in the box as needed.
  • Recognition (3.5/5) – Recognition is pretty good for the most part. Sometimes incorrectly tries to anticipate the route and moves slightly out of position.

Press Coverage: 10

  • Coverage Ability (4/7) – Didn’t play press much in the LSU defense.
  • Physicality (2/3) – Has some physicality to his game, but it’s a measured physicality.

Overall: (79) – 2nd/3rd Round
