2023 Senior Bowl Scouting: EDGE Durrell Johnson, Liberty

2023 Senior Bowl Watchlist Scouting Notes: EDGE Durrell Johnson, Liberty

Durrell Johnson is an intriguing edge defender who best fits in a 3-4 scheme as a RUSH EDGE. He has grown tremendously over the last few years at Liberty, becoming their marquee pass rusher and playmaker on the defensive side of the ball. His coachability has been very observable on tape. His game has gotten better, and his technique continued to get better over each season. Johnson looks like a late-round pick/undrafted free agent who hasn’t hit his ceiling yet and can grow into a role in the NFL.

Durrell Johnson scouting report

Pros:

  • Good lateral quickness.
  • Good body control. Can change directions quickly.
  • Relatively explosive.
  • Very strong upper body.
  • Hand usage is there; very active while attacking.
  • Tough tackler but doesn’t show a consistent wrap-up. Vicious at the point of contact.
  • Flashes excellent instincts in coverage.
  • He plays through the whistle. Doesn’t hesitate to run plays down from behind or in other parts of the field.

Cons:

  • Not a great speed guy, has some quickness but doesn’t have the speed to contain the boundary well.
  • Placement is very raw. He doesn’t understand where exactly to attack.
  • Not particularly adept in zone coverage. He lacks the athleticism to properly cover the flat when asked.
  • He will need some time to adjust to the level of competition – he might not look great in all-star games.
