2023 Senior Bowl Scouting Notes: EDGE Dylan Horton, TCU

2023 Senior Bowl Watchlist Scouting Notes: EDGE Dylan Horton, TCU

Dylan Horton is a transfer from New Mexico who has blossomed in the Big 12 over the last three years, showing steady improvement over every year he played. Horton has been a hot NFL prospect this season, accruing attention from several national media analysts this offseason. Horton not only made both the Senior Bowl watchlist this season, but also the Shrine Bowl 1000 and was mentioned on Bruce Feldman’s Freaks. He’s a fun prospect who has some upside left to present but is close to reaching his ceiling as a player.

Dylan Horton scouting notes

Pros:

  • His first step is good and versatile. Can rush from a stand-up and a three-point stance.
  • Has some explosion to his game.
  • Upper body strength is good, but not great.
  • I don’t see a lot of hand usage from Horton pre-2022. This year, he’s gotten better. Is attacking now, and has an idea of how to use his hands effectively. Does a great job getting his hands up to disrupt passing lanes.
  • Solid wrap-up tackler.
  • Good pursuit defender inside of the box.
  • Has a good motor. Plays to the whistle. I don’t see him taking many plays off. Stays in full go until the whistle.

Cons:

  • He has average speed, even for his position group. His form is filled with wasted motion – needs to refine some of his running technique.
  • Very stiff athlete. Struggles to work under blocks effectively.
  • Hand placement looks better and much improved in 2022. Looks like it could still get better, but that will come with time.
  • Lacks a lot of starting experience over his four previous seasons. Started the 2021 season as the starter and worked more into a rotational role by the end of the season.
